There are a number of greats that I'd have a hard time picking over the others. Just wanted to make sure Sophia got her due. I'd say ALF too, but as a puppet, he's in a different category.
Rose rules too. Hell, all the Golden Girls were great characters. Dorothy never gets credit, but that show doesn't work without such a great straight man (woman).

It's a tough one but I give Archie Bunker the slightest nod over Fred Sanford.
The thing that made these two characters so brilliant was how flawed they were as people and yet still sympathetic to the viewing audience.
And they had the best supporting casts too. Where would Archie and Fred be without the "dingbat" and "Big Dummy".
