This one is a little before my time so I haven't seen it as much but the Maynard Krebs character in "Dobie Gillis" seems almost groundbreaking since that show was in the same time period as all those vanilla shows like Leave it to Beaver and Donna Reed. Shows back then might have one or two episodes where a crazy hippie makes an appearance but he was in almost every episode.

Hey! Maynard wasn't a Hippie; he was a Beatnik!

God I hated that goodie goodie two shoes family......

Al is/was the hero of every man in America.......And Kelly was hot and a dumb bimbo:


There were some funny lines in that show, but IMHO the adults were over-acting buffoons. Kelly & Bud were what made "Married with Children" watch-able.

A lot of really good characters have been tossed about... Barney Fife, Andy Taylor, Jed Clampett, Granny, Homer Simpson, Lucy Ricardo, and many others...

I may still think of someone else, but for me - right now - it has to be Maxwell Smart.
