I dont know if anyone's done this, but i trust you guys more than any of the writers out there. I'm watchin a stream of the pens/bruins game and i saw like a 90 second commercial on the battle of alberta and it got me thinkin.. What do you think the best rivalry is in the NHL?

(i thought of as many as i could, and that the poll thing would let me, if i left out some feel free to add)

I voted Montreal vs. Toronto. I don't really think there are any true great rivalries right now. Washington/Pittsburgh and Pittsburgh/Philly are good, but I think we need some blood injected into that. I would have put Detroit/Chicago on that list over Detroit/Anaheim, personally. With the Blues making noise and their undying hate for Detroit and Chicago, the Blackhawks/Red Wings/Blues triangle of hate could rival the Devils/Rags/Flyers of the 90s.

I voted Montreal vs. Toronto.

They are born hating each other:

None of the above?

There really aren't any good rivalries right now. Not like the knock down drag out hate filled rivalries like the Av's and Wings of the mid 90's or the Sabres and Senators a few years back.

I am sure the rule changes have helped kill those off (and salary cap).

Right on.

The Flyers / Bruins and Rangers / Isles of the late 70 and early 80s were pretty vicious too.

I think it's free agency. Players move so much, you don't develop deep-seeded hate. No one is in one place long enough, and you never know who's gonna be a teammate next year.

It seems to change around every few years, but at present I'd go for Pittsbugh/Philly just because both teams are good right now, they've both played in the finals the past few seasons and they've met in the playoffs twice in the last three years.

Seriously I voted Pens/Flyers cause I'm a big homer. And I dunno... I see it a lot and it seems like the most intense rivalry at the moment.

If we're talkin best rivalries, gotta go with an original six matchup.

Montreal - Boston should at least be an option. So should Detroit - Chicago.

Obviously I hate the Pens the most. What really gets me is the fans, though.

I am including a picture of a typical Pens fan for everyone to hate with me.

mm forgot montreal boston and chicago detroit.. apologies

general consensus is there isn't a legit rivalry right now.. i voted pitt/philly.. but like honus said, it might actually be the fans that have the bigger rivalry..

wish i was old enough to see the blood bath rivalries in the 70s and 80s :(

it's a GREAT rivalry if you happen to live in Philly or Pitt... to the rest of us... meh.
then again, I always looked forward to those game, but only because it was fun to watch the swamp thread would blow up.

It's hard to say this objectively (and no, I didn't really believe my vote :)).....they change so much. In the late 90's it would have been Detroit-Colorado. I'd say the most vicious between "teams" TODAY would be Philly-Pitt. Rivalries between "fans" could be different. Historically, I'd probably say Montreal vs Toronto (or Boston).

Also, between the fans, their are rivalries even if they don't mean much at the time to the players. I'm sure Dash and sTyL hate each others teams more than the actual players do at this point because they aren't both really good at the same time.

Tough call but I voted Calgary vs Edmonton based on history since those 2 franchises came into existence (which is slightly longer than I've been watching), not so much based on the present. I was tempted to go with Montreal vs Toronto but for as long as I've been watching hockey that's been more about the fans and the media than the actual rivalry between the teams. Plus even if we go way back and look at the entire history they aren't necessarily each other's top rival.

Detroit-Anaheim ain't much of a rivalry right now. Pronger leaving helped a lot, but lots of other nasty ducks are gone, too.
