If you wanna talk classic rivalry, than Boston Montreal, and they still have that rivalry to this day. So I'd say that and the Battle of Alberta are both heated...but with teams fluxuating in talent, it changes. Pens/Flyers has been good the past few seasons, but wasn't always that way. And Pens/Caps...well, it's up there because of star power, but still lopsided toward Wash in the regular season. So, Boston Montreal wins out for both anger/hatred in the rivalry and longevity.

Boston and Montreal by far. But there are plenty of good ones in hockey. Red Wings and Avs was awesome. Pretty much what Pix said... Pens and Flyers is always fun to watch. Pens and Caps is another good one.

I was gonna mention Detroit and Denver...but it's been fairly irrelevant since the 90's

West/East rivalries are tough to uphold. The Pens and Wings sort of had one because they saw each other twice in the finals...but outside of that, you play eachother once, maybe twice, in a season.

I can see that, but it was a physical and emotional Cup series. Maybe that one or two times they see each other in 2011-2012 will be another physical match with a few cheap shots which could continue a little heat.

A little...but most of the rivalries come from multiple playoff series, or divisional opponents. Boston and Montreal have played countless series, and are divisional foes. Battle of Alberta-divisional, Pens/Flyers-divisional, Pens/Caps-former divisional, many postseason series, and still 4 games a year, old Det/Colorado-lots of postseason series. So, really, unless they meet up in the Finals again...I don't see it happening really. Could though. Just that regular season games (unless at the very end of the season) never seem to carry quite the intensity and hatred of the postseason.

I would think out of all sports Hockey would be the easiest to have a rivalry spark up literally over one night. Because of the physical game and the fact that fighting is a huge part of hockey, you have one good brawl between a team and BAM they are rivals and hate each other the next time they play. Giving better odds to more fights breaking out. Also with the passion hockey fans have for their team, it seems like if their team breaks out in a fight or dislikes a player on another team or just doesn't like another team the entire fanbase is on their side.

Don't know, just seems like hockey has a great recipe for creating new rivalries within one game.

-Physicality of the game
-Passion from players and fans
-grueling schedules
-hostile environments
-blue collar

Hockey has the best rivalries outside of college sports.

i'll agree with this. Infact, hockey reminds me a lot of college football or college sports for that matter. both players and fans are very passionate for their respected programs. Just feels like hockey isn't all about the $$.

i agree with college sports and hockey having good rivalries.. nfl is alright i suppose.. but i dont know how you can have a good rivalry in baseball, there's nothing physical.. IMO rivalries are about being out for blood, and you cant really do that in baseball.. in other words, i think the bosox/yankees rivalry hype is stupid. its not the best rivalry in sports.

reason baseball has good rivalries is they have had these rivalries for over 100 years and a lot of the rivalries stemmed from other issues rather then sports. It was more of a city vs city issue back then.

As far as the Cup Finalist rivals go I would not say the Flyers/hawks have any kind of rivalry now, I mean our ine game this year was fun, but next year not so much. Will never forgive that fanbase for it as I didnt even like them before that series.

Unfortunatley the NHL thinks we hate eachother more and our Winter Classic is rumored to be with them now. Ew.
