For best results, play during an elongated whiskey drunk. RIP Chris.

There are two other players I would add: Chet Atkins and John Fogerty. Chet Atkins had a huge influence on country and pop. Nope, he is not as flashy as Eddie V. or Slash, but more in the vein of BB King where he had an extremely smooth and natural style that has influenced generations of guitar players. John Fogerty is another guitarist who (and even by his own admission) is not known for being a flashy guitar virtuoso. But the beauty in his playing was his ability to take the guitar and write some beautiful, melodic rock and roll. His guitar riffs are legendary and the swamp sound he created in the 60s with Creedence has been hugely influential. There is no denying that the OP's list is spot on.

Jimmy Vaughn(Stevie's Brother)

Alex Lifeson of Rush

These two should be added, but out of the choices I have to go with Eric Clapton because of this.

Wow glad I came to this board instead of the other option, people here actually have good taste. Normally I get hammered when I try to tell ppl SRV was the best guitar player ever. For some reason people are enamored with Hendrix who was good and unique for his time. But for me I like clarity when I listen to a guitar.

My faves in order:

1. SRV
2. Clapton
3. Beck
4. Gilmour
5. King

Now go and ask all five mentioned who is the GOAT, and they will all say Hendrix.'

How can anyone pick SRV over Hendrix? I refer you to the above Bill Burr video...that's like flying a plane, and comparing yourself to the Wright Brothers..lol

I will tell me how I can contact SRV.

How can anyone pick SRV over Hendrix? Easy he was better, Hendrix was in the right place at the right time and was doing things that hadn't been done before. He was original using feedback and lighting his guitar on fire etc but IMO he didn't play as well as SRV.

Judging by the results a few others feel this way too.

SRV is just doing what Hendrix invented.

IF when asked, SRV DOESN'T list Jimi as the greatest, then he is a liar and should be ashamed of himself.

Jerome Bettis has more rushing yards than Jim Brown.

Who was better? Better question, whose legacy will be stronger 20 years from now?

Someone already mentioned Robin Trower. For me, it has always been a tie between RT and the late Gary Moore for who I think had the best combination of ability & 'feel' among the guitarists that I grew up listening to.

I think you are missing the point.

Obviously things are better now. Everything has evolved. From technology, to nutrition, to our minds. All that does is make the case that "the new" has it easier now that the road has already been paved by "the old".

There is no SRV, without Hendrix.

You have to respect the inventors, that shared no peer, during their time.

LMAO There is no SRV without Hendrix, you're joking I assume? SRV was more influenced by guys like BB King . Lighting Hopkins, T-Bone Walker, Freddie King and Albert Collins, none of his influence came from Hendrix or very little if any. Sure he covered Little Wing and others and actually did much better version but SRV was damn sure gonna be around had Hendrix never been around
