and you bet your ass the Browns refer to the 89% mark as the salary cap so much that they actually think it is the real cap.

Which is the most ridiculous way tostructure a contract, because if something comes up that year and you have to get an extra player, a guys breaks out and becomes a start and you need to reup him, etc, that cap hit by Wallace could be disasterous.

It is better to structure contracts prety equal from year to year so you can afford to keep players over the duration of their contract rather than having to release them or worry about fielding a 56 man roster when a few guys are destroying your cap for that season.

I believe that is an extreme example, but nonetheless, it is an example of how contracts can be structured. But apparently, it's too complicated for the Bengals to be able to project to the next year, let alone 3-4 years down the road as I assume most teams do.

Or they're just cheap.

DUH! 89% over 4 years is still 89%, though. And they won't spend a cent more than that. Count on it.

I might have misunderstood what you meant at first. I thought you were saying they will never go above the average of 89% for the four year period. Somehow implying they would somehow be able to skirt the 89% totally.

If they spend less than 89% this year...they would, logically, have to spend above 89% sometime between '14-'16 to get to that threshold.

And yes...I find it reprehensible that they would only want to hit the minimum that is required by the CBA.

yea, it's one thing to say, "spending more money doesn't always bring more championships", but its pretty much a guarantee that "spending as little as possible just to make more money pretty much guarantees you won't"

If they resign all of Green, Dalton, Atkins, Johnson, Dunlap, and Smith to long term deals, then that is pretty much all our cap room for this year and next.

AJ Green $12-$14 mil/annually
Andy Dalton $10-$12 mil/annually
Geno Atkins $10-$12 mil/annually
Michael Johnson $8-$9 mil/annually
Andre Smith $7-$9 mil/annually
Carlos Dunlap $6-$8 mil/annually

Could be as much as $64 million (over half our cap) to keep all of them. Who are you letting go to spend more in FA, where the Bengals have been piss poor in high profile signings?

Good teams move money off one year's cap by creatively using signing bonuses and structuring some deals that don't contain guaranteed cash in late years. Then they make the guy come back to the table to renegotiate.

I know more about salary cap manipulation then Mike does, apparently.

Also, you are assuming that we are re-siging Tits, Dunlap, and Johnson..... That is an ambitious assumption and is most likely wrong.

Tits could walk any day now.

We'll re-sign EITHER Johnson or Dunlap, but not both. That's why we provided deals to both Gilberry and Geathers. Whomever makes it to the negotiating table first will probably get a deal. I'm guessing it will be Johnson.

You also have to ask yourself whether simply signing your own is going to get you anywhere? Do you think by inking all our own guys, we'll be closer to a Super Bowl?

And that's how teams like Oakland have $32 million in dead money on this years cap. The Bengals have a terrible track record of high profile FA signings. Why do you have faith in that now? They have been drafting we'll in recent years.

When did I mention Oakland as a good team?

Antonio Bryant is not "high profile." You're nutty.

Laverneus Coles? hahahaha. Stop.

If our best players start walking, then I'll be pissed. If we lose them and sign another FA bust we won't be any closer either. Get these guts resigned, then start working the cap.
