I agree! I'm not looking for us to go out and sign the big prize -- Though I would have been happy with getting Mike Wallace! But there are some really good players that can add to critical needs. It's embarrassing that we still haven't acquired a serviceable safety. In fact, our only decent safety in the entire Marvin Lewis era came through a trade (Reggie Nelson).

2 exclamation points in one post. Who the fuck are you?

The key is to find a balance. We can't be the Miami Dolphins or Eagles, just signing players like crazy, over-paying in many instances, and hoping they work out. However, signing a few solid, starting-quality guys, or one big name, especially at safety, should be the plan.

I agree with this..

another point i'd make is that's it's not so much signing your own vs. signing FA, it's about value.

With the money they spent on Micheal Johnson's franchise tender they could have afforded Cliff Avrail and Reggie Bush.. or Micheal Bennett and Danny Amendola...

I would like to sign:

S - Michael Huff

LB - Daryl Smith, Thomas Howard,

CB - Adam Jones and then either Aqib Talib/Brent Grimes/Chris Owens/E.J. Biggers/Tracy Porter/D.J. Moore.

RB - either LaRod Stephens Howling/Beanie Wells/Chris Rainey/Felix Jones/DeJuan Harris

WR - either Laurent Robinson/Michael Jenkins/Darius Heyward-Bey/Devery Henderson/Brandon Gibson/Early Doucet/Steve Breaston/Danario Alexander

None of those guys are going to cost a ton, but give us veteran guys who can come in right away and play at an above average level, giving us an upgrade at every position.

There is a fine line though. You cannot discount chemistry. The entire d-line plays very well as a unit. Getting an equally talented player or even a slightly more talented player may not necessarily help the line (though I'm sure that depends on a number of factors).

Skill players are easier to plug in.

Skill players with actual "skill" are easier to plug in. We'll just draft a guy who may or may not be decent. We're good. It's all good.

That's true. It can work both ways ways though. The DL is such a team strength that another talented player could thrive with the attention that's paid to Atkins and Dunlap. And even if there's a slight drop in overall production it might be worth the risk to give the offense another playmaker.

this isn't intended as slight on Johnson who's a really good player. but if you're going to be stingy with the cap I think the money could have been spent in better ways.

That assumes Avril and Bush wanted to come here and would come here for that price. Bush wanted to-be an everydown back, wouldn't happen here.

The players were just hypothetical..

The team's made the playoffs back to back yr and they have a really strong young nucleus of talent. it shouldn't be considered a bad landing spot at this point.

the main reason a player would be reluctant to sign here is the owner's reputation for being "frugal"..

which goes back to square one of the entire debate..

Nothing we can really do about the "Mike Brown factor". Just a pitfall of being a Bengals fan.
