This seems to be the thinking regarding spending, cap space, etc. when it comes to our Bengals.

Now that the 89% thing is a little clearer (have to average 89% cash spend in a 4 year period), this is the course they are seemingly going to take:

- get in the neighborhood of the cash spend this year. Roll over more money to next year when they will need to extend Geno, AJ and (to the dismay of many) Dalton.

This thinking is further illustrated by this quote:

"It's not a one-year process. You have to look at the next three-four years. That's why you saw guys getting released over the last week or two," Lewis said. "Some teams look at this as a one-two year deal and then they get unrealistic and have to release the player because they had too much of a percentage of cap room.

"It's important to develop our own guys unless there is a void. Develop them and get better. Nothing has changed where they are."

Bengals keep eye on Smith

and this tweet from Joe Reedy:

RT @gobucks21: @joereedy current cap number for bengals?>I've got $32.9M left w/out draft & '14 carryover. Factor that and $12-14M left

I've also read here and there (sorry...no links because I can't find said articles) that they are planning on carrying more $ over and spend big (or at least bigger) in 2014.

Additionally, here is a spreadsheet for this year's salaries and cap numbers.

However...they would allow themselves additional wiggle room (by their standards) if they would jettison (or rework) the deals for Wharton, Jason Allen and Jamaal Anderson. As is, they will be three of the highest paid players on the '13 squad.

No fear though...the man is on it.

Love the "roll over" people. They have to spend 89% on average whether they roll over 8 trillion dollars or zero dollars. They won't pay a cent more than the 89%. You cannot expect to compete when you're spending that much less.

After Dalton proves he can't get this team to the next level over the next year or 2 we'll start our rebuild over again.

Nothing has changed.

They plan on busting the nut in 2014 because they will have the following players to lock up...

AJ Green (extension)
Geno Atkins (FA)
Michael Johnson (FA)
Carlos Dunlap (FA)
Andy Dalton (extension)

There is absolutely no way they re-sign all those guys..... There is a reason why they gave Gilberry and Geathers multi-year deals. They expect to lose either Johnson or Dunlap. The guy they keep will be the guy that makes it to the negotiating table first. It's how we do business.

It's cash spend vs. the cap itself.

Click on this link and check out the Eric Weddle example.

That's the "roll over" they are referring to. I'm not advocating for anything...just pointing out what seems to be the thinking from the Browns/Blackburns/Black Jesus

They have to spend 89% on average whether they roll over 8 trillion dollars or zero dollars. They won't pay a cent more than the 89%.

If they don't reach the 89% threshold this season that means they have to spend more than 89% at some point in order to avg 89% over four years.

And that will probably happen when they need to extend: Geno, AJ, etc.

DUH! 89% over 4 years is still 89%, though. And they won't spend a cent more than that. Count on it.

In a way this is good, but only for 2014. If you had to spend to cap this year, then you have to start releasing players left and right like Baltimore in order to free up enough room for AJ Green and Atkins. However, I would lock Adkins up long term now to avoid having to negotiate with him next year.

Then you have Dunlap and Johnson.

If Atkins is locked up long term and Green and Dalton have some wiggle room time because they are not FA's yet, then all you have to worry about is Johnson and Atkins.

Besides, I think I would almost let Dunlap walk anyways, lock up Johnson with his character and high motor, and just try to draft a DE in the first two rounds next year. Or if Geathers and Gilberry are doing fine, so be it.

Lock Atkins up long term this year to help get to the 89% for this year, and then sign Johnson to a more cap friendly deal next year instead of his franchise tender, lock up Green long term.

Obviously we are in a wait and see mode with Dalton to see if he can turn things around a bit this year before discussing extension with him.

It would be silly to spend 100%. That's just nuts.

We coulda signed Wallace, Goldson, Bush, Welker, retained all our key FA's, and still have been well under the cap. Math is fun, ain't it?!

If we had done all that this year, and didn't save any for Adkins and Green, we would never have been able to sign them.

Green and Adkins will make about 22-25 million a year combined between the two of them.

Math fail. Salaries come off the books every year. Also, Green has 2 years left on his rookie deal.

Math doesn't fail, because if you have 10 guys coming off the books, and you are giving all their salaries to 2 guys, you still need to sign 8 more guys with no money. Maybe your math fails a little bit.

That's not how NFL contracts work. They can be structured so that any given year on the contract doesn't have a high cap hit.

End of this day, this carrying over $10 million is nonsense. It's an easy way to confuse someone who doesn't know how the salary structure in the NFL works. This is why you're only hearing the Bengals talking about it.

Mike Wallace cap hit this year is 3 mil. Next year it's 17. Just an example of what you said.

Which is the most ridiculous way tostructure a contract, because if something comes up that year and you have to get an extra player, a guys breaks out and becomes a start and you need to reup him, etc, that cap hit by Wallace could be disasterous.

It is better to structure contracts prety equal from year to year so you can afford to keep players over the duration of their contract rather than having to release them or worry about fielding a 56 man roster when a few guys are destroying your cap for that season.

We could have spent plenty this year and still signed Atkins and Green.

No its not, that's why no team that is good year after year does that.

what they will do is spend a little less than 89% on average for the first few years of this deal, and they will try to change it back so that owners like Brown can go back to business as usual. So, he won't spend to bring up the average until the last year or two.

I wouldn't expect him to dig too big of a hole though. but you can bet your ass with Brown, it won't be about winning games, it will just be about a desperate attempt to keep the money, so if it looks like a giant clusterf*** when it happens all I can say is "i told you so"
