Football season is finally here..... A couple of interesting subplots this weekend. Bengals first game since playoff meltdown vs. Jets first game since week 17 letdown. 15th anniversary of 9/11 in NY - Hard to believe that many of the players were in elementary school when the attacks happened. Bengals nursing a lot of injuries on offense, the Burfict suspension and a new offensive coordinator. I think this game will be close.

I'm going with the Bengals 24, Jets 23. Nugent misses two field goals but saves us at the gun.

I think the Burfict suspension is way over-blown. He missed 8 games last year, and while yes, he's a big time player, this defense did very well without him. No question he takes it to another level, but I just think people have focused on this way too much, IMO.

I think it's going to be a low scoring game, overall. 17-13 or something like that. Dalton will struggle without Eifert, and while Boyd helps pick up some of the slack, the offense can't stretch the field without Eifert to off-set AJ Green on the other side.

I look for Fitzpatrick to have a regression year. He's been around for quite some time, and while he was very good last year, I just don't see him duplicating that kind of a season. Not a horrible season, but just not what he accomplished last year. Afterall, he's a journeyman QB for a reason.

21-13 Jets.
Revis gets 2 picks and everything thinks he's the greatest cb again.

24-17, Bengals.

Bengals are the much better team.

Marvin Lewis will make sure we don't get too far ahead, but we have the better team.

24-12 Bengals
TD: Green - 2, Hewitt - 1

our running game will appear to struggle, but still grind out 80-90 yards.

The defense was fine without Burfict.... But with Burfict they were terrific. He's a game changer in a number of ways and I think we'll miss that. Maybe not so much this week against the Jets, but certainly next week against the Steelers.

Oh, I totally agree. The defense is a top 12 defense without him, and a top 6 defense with him (Maybe not literally, but illustrating his impact).

My issue has been all off-season people (not you, but in general) seem to be pointing to Burfict missing 3 games as if it's going to have some massive domino effect on the defense where it won't be able to play at a high level without him.

So while I agree that he is one of the few guys on that defense that help push it over the hump into elite territory, I'm just tired of the narrative that this defense will "struggle" without him. Believe it, or not, I feel that the LB corps this year is pretty deep and even better equipped to handle his 3 game suspension than last year. I would argue that losing Atkins or Jones would have a bigger overall impact on the defense than Burfict due to the lack of depth at those positions.

Nugget only missed one..... And it wasn't at the gun.... And I was off by 2 total points.

nicely done.

I was either overly optimistic, or the jets are better than usual.

we won, on to next week.

Jets were 10-6 last year. Their defense is legit. With only AJ Green to worry about, and Revis expected to cover him well, it's no surprise that the Jets sent multiple blitzes play after play. No Eifert, LaFell has the hand injury and barely played in the pre-season, a rookie WR, etc...

Credit to AJ for torching Revis Island, and big time Kudos to Andy Dalton who stayed in the pocket, moved around and stepped up in the pocket multiple times, never got happy feet, and kept this offense from imploding after 5 first half-sacks.

It's one game, and there is a long season yet left to be played, but it seems as if this Dalton kid has grown up and is a legitimate NFL QB. Damn.

Andy Dalton is easily at top 10 qb..... And he might be top 5. The fact that he can throw 360+ without a center is pretty amazing. Having AJ Green doesn't hurt.

Oh, no doubt.

But there was concern going into this yea, and rightfully so. Eifert is out. Jones is gone. Everything went about as well as it could last year, offensively, for Dalton and he looked like a star. Going into this year, things had been changed dramatically, and we were all expecting a fair drop-off from Dalton. He'll probably still be up and down until Eifert is healthy, and Boyd can get into the flow, but going against that defense, and directing the offense the way he did after the sacks and the pressure, shows that last year's leap may not have all been about just surrounding him with players that make him better. Maybe he's starting to make others around him better as well.

He also should get credit for how confident he is when the team is down on the road..... He almost looks like he relishes the opportunity. For a guy that was a bit of a head case in big moments his first couple of seasons, this has been a really nice development.

Brandon Lafell looked good to me. I would expect him to get more involved each week.
