So does this indicate that the Bears now realize that their :lame: return blocking is the problem, not the return man?

M5 remember the league has done everything it can to pretty much eliminate the kick return game.

No wedges anymore, kickoffs from the 35 that are almost guaranteed to go endzone...

Now, as far as other teams being able to rip off 40 yd returns, yeah that is a legitamate gripe however I think we're only a a year or three away from then eliminating kickoff returns entirely one way or the other.

Craig Steltz released

This is kinda surprising. We don't even know who are dumb starters are yet at safety let alone depth? Craig was serviceable as a backup and on ST.

Hard to believe we are that deep at a position that the starters are still an unknown.

Ya, out of all the cuts this one makes you wonder, but he had been injured or banged up and unable to have a full go for most of camp.

This was a surprise to me too Milkshake. You think they'd keep a few safeties around.

Yeah- the Craig Steltz one was odd- I know he had a pulled groin for most of camp and didn't play much... Now Senn, Weems and Steltz three ST players we thought they were counting on are gone.

well, it's getting down to the wire, and we're gonna only carry 4 safeties. Obviously the judges have spoken that CS ain't the Iron Chef.

Collins, come on? Bears just spent two high drafts on DTs, plus Paea and Ratliff, and we have a high end free agent (Houston) who plays both DT and DE. Most teams carry 4 DTs, and we are going to carry 5/6?

Collins was only here in case someone got hurt during camp. That's it. He was OK, but not remarkable enough to paralyze your overall roster over.

(cue a DT going down during Preseason Game 4 now that I've said this)

what's more interesting are the remaining slugfests at other positions. We still have 9 CBs on roster. Wow, what a battle that is for what must be...what...really the sixth CB spot which is really a special teamer? One more to go on safety...probably Jennings is out, right? Couple OL spots, couple last LB spots, RB, TE, last receiver.

All more or less sounds like a raging battle for Special teams to me. The third phase is all that remains.

Not sure that his retention would have been enough to paralyze the entire roster. I'm far more sure that he's been a better player when healthy than Stephen Paea for roughly the entire time they've been pros. Fer my money, that's the regrettable part.

But Collins has been hurt, and it's been tough to get a bead on our DTs this offseason. No point in regretting what might've been...though the way he was coming on before the injury, I'd love to see some evidence that anyone else in the rotation has come on to challenge his place. I just haven't seen that. 'Cause I'm a fan, and my paychecks ain't signed by Ginny.

(cue a DT going down during Preseason Game 4 now that I've said this)

If another DT goes down, the DTs are gonna go down, that's for sure.

Just saw this: With Steltz gone- their are only 5 remaining players on the roster that were drafted by Jerry Angelo...
Lance Briggs and Charles Tillman (2003), Matt Forte (2008) and Stephen Paea and Chris Conte (2011)

And people wonder why the Defense has been bad. That dumbass couldn't find any young talent that could be groomed to take over for aging players. Thus The Chicago Bears are one of the oldest teams in the league. (Seattle superbowl champion Seabirds are one of the youngest...boo)

I know his play was limited to a couple of games, but I thought Steltze outplayed Conte and Wright last year. ( know that's not saying much)

I realize we're "stacked" at d-line cubs, but most teams carry more than 4 d-linemen on their roster...that's actually crazy, cuz I bet the average is closer to 9.

There would literally be no depth chart, if they only kept 4 on the roster.

As anyone who knew me on KFFL knows, I'm no Jerry Angelo fan.

Here's a quick breakdown of drafted players who "contributed" (an arbitrary term that more or less equates to "started several games not due to injury" and/or "played a key role on ST")
2002: 3/9 (M. Columbo, 1st; A. Brown, 4th; A. Peterson, 6th)
2003: 3/12 (R. Grossman, 1st; C. Tillman, 2nd; L. Briggs, 3rd)
2004: 4/8 (T. Harris, 1st; T. Johnson, 2nd; B. Berrian, 3rd; N. Vasher, 4th)
2005: 2/6 (K. Orton, 4th; C. Harris, 6th)
2006: 2/7 (D. Manning, 2nd; D. Hester, 2nd)
2007: 3/9 (G. Olsen, 1st; G. Wolfe, 3rd; C. Graham, 5th)
2008: 6/12 (C. Williams, 1st; M. Forte, 2nd; E. Bennett, 3rd; C. Steltz, 4th; Z. Bowman, 5th; K. Davis, 5th)
2009: 4/9 (H. Melton, 4th; D.J. Moore, 4th; J. Knox, 5th; L. Louis, 7th)
2010: 3/6 (M. Wrong, 3rd; C. Wootton, 4th; J. Webb, 7th)
2011: 3/5 (G. Carimi, 1st; S. Paea, 2nd; C. Conte, 3rd)
33/83, 39.8%

At the same time, contrast that with Phil Emery.
2012: 2/6 (S. McClellin, 1st; A. Jeffrey, 2nd)
2013: 3/6 (K. Long, 1st; J. Bostic, 2nd; J. Mills, 5th)
5/12, 41.7%

Better, but hardly by a significant margin. Isaiah Frey (2012) is too fringe to count, and there's still time for Marquess Wilson (2013) who flashed some promise. (I harbor no such hopes for Khaseem Greene or Cornelius Washington.)

I like Phil Emery, and in particular the job he's done rebuilding the Bears offensive line (sooooo long neglected), but Angelo managed to score well in free agency a couple of times too, so ultimately Emery needs to be evaluated on his drafting. So far he's been better than JA, but not by much. :hope:

Yea, granted he had some hits in F/A, but he also bombed badly in F/A as well. Williams as a Wr comes to mind or Omilaya kid or the ex pro bowl Tackle, etc...
