Seriously though, wtf? He's 40, $10 million per? At $5 million per I could've swallowed this. The Wilpon's finances better be in order because if this contract hinders their ability to sign other, more worthwhile players I will be furious. They couldn't find a cheaper option? They have Gee, Niese and Wheeler ready to go with a number of other young arms ready to compete for jobs, why not grab a 3/4 pitcher for under $10?

Can I get an over/under on this?

Now that he is in New York, how long will it be before he comes out with a "Bartolo Cologne"?

Jeter has something like 5, and he does not have the perfect name, like Bartolo does.

True, but he's not even half as handsome as Derek.

Are they the same owners who signed Jason Bay, etc?

Same owners, different GM. I've actually warmed up to the deal. It's a nice bridge until Harvey is back. He'll eat innings, and if all looks to be going well with Harvey's recovery I could see them moving Colon before this contract is up. 2015 is the target year for the Mets and at that point we'll have a bunch of young guys ready to go. This is nice insurance just in case.

Are they going to bring back John Rocker as well?

Maybe they'll sign Mark Prior

Colon had a great season last year, so clearly he still has some in the tank... 2 years for 20 mil is not that much in baseball terms especially as a free agent... Could the mets have gotten better value elsewhere?? probably, but a good veteran arm is not a bad thing to get...

He also will eat up plenty of innings for us, minimum 180 IMO. Hopefully close to 200.

And again, I think if Harvey is showing signs of life and looks to be good to go the Mets probably deal Colon before the contract is up. 2015 has been the target year for some time so it never hurts having a stockpile of quality pitching, if for nothing else just to trade to get help elsewhere.

I believe he will also be a good mentor for our young guys. Beane said the guys in Oakland loved him and most looked up to him.

After reading this and the extended post, i'm really liking the signing now.

The Yankees took a chance on him in 2011. After an effective year in the Bronx, he headed to Oakland in 2012 for $2 million, only to draw a 50-game ban for testosterone. Then in 2013, he put together one of the best years of his career.
Why is his timing so good? In 2013, Colon posted a career-best 2.65 ERA in 190 1/3 innings of work for Oakland. He was very close to the same pitcher he was in 2012 for the A’s when he ran a 3.43 ERA in 152 1/3 innings, but he got lucky in two key areas: he stranded runners at an abnormally high rate, and fewer fly balls turned into home runs than in the year before. Colon’s FIP – Fielding Independent Pitching (which is scaled to ERA based heavily on strikeout and walk rates and normalizes batted ball events and timing) – dropped, but less dramatically so, from 3.82 in 2012 to 3.23 in 2013.
