Dolphins release Danny Amendola, who is reportedly interested in return to Patriots
usatsi_11816410-e1544385265306.jpg

By: Henry McKenna | 11 minutes ago

Danny Amendola needs a job and the New England Patriots need a receiver. Could a reunion be in the works?

The Miami Dolphins released Amendola on Friday, and the receiver is interested in rejoining the Patriots, who may have a great deal of turnover at receiver with Josh Gordon, Phillip Dorsett, Chris Hogan and Cordarrelle Patterson set to enter free agency.

Amendola burned Bill Belichick on his way out the door last offseason, with Amendola expressing frustration over Malcolm Butler’s benching. However, he may have grown discontent in Miami under Adam Gase in 2018. Perhaps that time with the Dolphins has changed his perspective on New England’s negatives.

Bringing back Amendola could be tricky for the Patriots. New England has a developmental slot receiver on the roster in Braxton Berrios, and Belichick could (and should) also look to draft and develop more young talent at the position. They need to stock on young talent, with Julian Edelman, 32, being the only player of significance at the position. If he became an immediate contributor, Amendola might interfere with the development of those younger players.

But the Patriots do have to think about acquiring contributors in the passing game that can contribute in 2019, and right now they’re not looking at many sure things. Amendola has proven incredibly trustworthy and would be a plug-and-play cog in New England’s offense. Depending on what sort of money he’d want, the Patriots would be wise to add him to the roster as a depth option, while seeking more talented and younger options.

No thanks.
Love Danny playoff.
Hate Danny half a season due to injury. Again.

Martellus Bennett is reportedly interested in coming out of retirement to join his brother in New England
The former Patriots tight end has wanted to play with his older brother in the past.

Could the New England Patriots unite another pair of brothers?

After news broke Friday afternoon that the team was finalizing a trade for Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Michael Bennett, an unnamed source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that former Patriots tight end Martellus Bennett is “interested in coming out of retirement” to join his older brother in New England.

With Rob Gronkowski considering retirement and Dwayne Allen leaving in free agency, the Patriots may indeed be in need of a tight end this offseason. And as Schefter noted, the team does have a record of uniting families. In addition to uniting safety Devin McCourty with his twin brother, cornerback Jason McCourty (who is a free agent this offseason), last season, head coach Bill Belichick also employs his son Steve as a defensive coach. The Patriots have also had twin brothers Jacob and Cody Hollister on the roster for the past two seasons.

The Patriots are reportedly trading their 2020 fifth-round draft pick in exchange for the 33-year-old defensive end and the Eagles’ 2020 seventh-round pick And his younger brother seemed pretty psyched about the news Friday.

Martellus Bennett played two seasons with the Patriots in 2016 and 2017, before retiring in the 2018 offseason to focus on creative off-the-field pursuits. However, according to NFL Network, the now-31-year-old tight end would have been willing to take a salary cut to stick around and play with his older brother, who the Patriots reportedly tried to acquire from the Seattle Seahawks last March.

“The Bennett brothers were going nuts trying to get it somehow so they could play together on the Patriots,” NFL Network reported Ian Rapoport said at the time. “I know Martellus Bennett was talking about taking less salary, trying to stick around so the Patriots could then trade for his brother.”

The Bennett brothers also played together in college for three seasons at Texas A&M.

Hell Yes.

Well I was right about AB ending up with the Raiders anyway. Can’t believe Pitt didn’t hold out for more...that is an unprecedented cave job by a team to a player with almost no leverage. It’s like they didn’t just live the Leveon Bell experience.

Ex-Dolphins, Patriots WR Danny Amendola, Lions Agree to Reported 1-Year Contract

Free-agent wide receiver Danny Amendola signed with the Detroit Lions on Monday, the team announced.

ESPN's Dianna Russini first reported on Monday that Amendola was taking a physical in Detroit and would sign with the team.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport outlined the terms of the deal:

Ian Rapoport @RapSheet
The #Lions plan to sign former #Patriots and #Dolphins WR Danny Amendola to a 1-year deal that includes $4.5M guaranteed base, source said. With incentives, that can bring him to $5.75M. Great addition to the locker room.

It will allow him to reunite with head coach Matt Patricia and general manager Bob Quinn from their time with the New England Patriots.

This follows his release from the Miami Dolphins in early March in a move that helped the club save $6 million. He had signed a two-year, $12 million contract ($8.25 million guaranteed) with Miami in March 2018.

Amendola has made a career out of being a possession receiver, averaging 9.7 yards per reception during his 10-year career while recording 50-plus catches six times.

The 33-year-old is coming off a year in which he led Miami in both catches (59) and receiving yards (575). He managed just one receiving touchdown, though he did throw a 28-yard touchdown pass as well.

Amendola put up decent numbers playing with both Ryan Tannehill and Brock Osweiler in a new offense. And while injuries have taken their toll on the 5'11", 190-pound wideout throughout his career, he has appeared in 15 games in each of the last two seasons.

Amendola has never been a red-zone threat, as he does his damage in the middle of the field. The Lions can use him after finishing 20th in the league in passing yards on the way to a 6-10 record and last-place finish in the NFC North.

So much for Donovan Smith's deal being the ceiling on Trent Brown's lol (I did say "in theory," at least)

This is completely overblown and untrue.

Danny%20Amendola%20Stats_zpscieaz0nx.png~original

So 10 seasons and he has only played 16 games twice.
Overblown, maybe, but untrue it is not.
Maybe not HALF a season Danny, but not Full season Danny.

This is definitely an overpayment but I do like the moves the Jets have made on both sides of the ball. Have helped Darnold have a good OL in front of him and some weapons to work with. Now can focus on defense in the draft to get after Brady and others.

Yesterday was actually a slow day for signings. Only 14 of the top 50 free agents agreed to new contracts with new teams. It was expected that somewhere between 20 and 25 FAs would be with new teams. Either there are bidding wars or teams are being very cautious about overspending.
