Bronson Arroyo adds to Dodgers postseason roster flexibility - True Blue LA
Here's a great write-up from Eric Stephen at SBNation about Bronson Arroyo's role in the Dodgers three-way trade with Atlanta and Miami. Initially, it just seemed like the Dodgers were being forced to bring him over to eat more salary from Atlanta, but then word got out that ATL is paying almost all of Arroyo's salary AND his 2015 buyout - except for 500k of course. So then, what's the point? Save 500k? That's practically nothing.
Stephen suggests that the Dodgers added Arroyo because it gives the Dodgers the ability to add any player who wasn't on the 40-man at the end of August to the Dodgers' playoff roster - something you're only allowed to do in order to replace an injured player. Arroyo, being an injured player, would qualify for that (along with Brandon McCarthy and Hyun-Jin Ryu, netting the Dodgers at least 3 such moves).
This thread is meant to be a general one, about the idea and other teams doing things like this. For the Dodgers-centric version, click here.
