I think the overtime format now is about as good as it's gonna get. Personally I'd like to see them go back to 10 minute overtime periods, but that doesn't appear likely to ever happen. As long as they never change the overtime playoff format, I'm good.

I don't think they want to go to 10 minute OT in the regular season, they don't want more wear and tear on the players - it's almost like a playoff game in that sense already

Because the coin flip gives the home team the decision on who goes first in the 5 on 3 in OT - it's like in football, do you want to play defense first or play offense first - it's the same thing here - and it's an interesting concept because if you are the home team and you decide to play defense first and you get the kill, all the momentum goes to the home team

But why try to settle a hockey game with anything remotely hockey like?

65 minutes of hockey isn't enough, bring out a field goal kicker. Or maybe each captain could pick a person in that Schnitzel race thing the Brewers do.

They could have a cheerleader for each team do duck calls. The coaches could each be given a block of ice and a chainsaw and have to carve the likeness of Louis CK holding a pineapple. They could try chip shots from center ice into a fan's cleavage or butt crack, best 3 out of five.

The possibilities are endless.

Or, we could just decide hockey games by playing, I don't know... hockey. And stop giving loser points, and make OT wins worth only 1.

Or you could have less parity by changing the point system - the point system isn't the problem, it creates parity and it gives teams a chance to win - the whole point of this is that people don't want as many shootouts and this is a way to do that

And deciding games with coin flips or rock paper scissors also reduces shootouts.

Give the millionaires a reason to end the game in the allotted time or play them til their legs fall of. Either way is fine with me, as long as the games are no longer settled with theatrics and gimmicks.

Look, not everything is going to be perfect and there's certain things you can't expect them to change, so just accept that - but if there's ways they can tweak and make it more interesting and exciting for the fans, those are things they should definitely consider

Yeah, but where does it stop? A few years ago they fed us a wheelbarrow of horseshit that shootouts would make it exciting and get new fans. Now we need a new solution because it's not enough. So if they adopt your idea, or the keep taking away a guy idea, then what when they are no longer exciting enough?

Do we try five a side, but for two minutes one team doesn't get sticks? 6 on 3 but the goalie for the 6 team has his pads bound together? Do we start awarding style points like the all star game breakaway contest? How about using 6x8 nets in OT?

How much more ridiculous do we have to get to make the game more "fun"?

To heck with the parity of the current points system. You win in regulation, you get 2. Play ten minute 4 on 4, if someone wins they get 1. If no one wins, no one gets points.

Believe me, you will see goalies pulled in stretch games with the score tied or in OT when a team needs two points to get in the playoffs. Because if you are sufficiently motivated to try and capture two points, someone will capture them. The game will open up. We don't need anymore non hockey solutions to a hockey problem.

Whether or not ties are a problem is another discussion.

I don't trust banks, so I prefer "A victory under my mattress" system.

I think a shoot out is goofy enough as it is but there is a precedence for them because its basically just a series of penalty shots which have (correct me if Im wrong someone) been part of hockey for a long time. So while I am tired of them, and the excitement of them pales in comparison of actual gameplay - I dont absolutley hate them. I woudl just like to see less of them.

Any 5 on 3 or 3 on 3 just seems silly to me, maybe sillier than a shoot out.

Here is something I was thiking about as I put my makeup on this morning. What about not having a stoppage between regulation and OT? When the clock winds down OT just starts. No stoppage, no faceoffs. 5 on 5 until a stoppage then 4 on 4.

Me neither...I'll take the "victory in the Credit Union" tho...

Victory in a ice girls bra?

Teams pull their goalie all the time at the end of a game in desperation mode to try to tie it up. So once in overtime, my 5 on 4 with the goalie pulled idea is best. Games would end quickly, would be decided on actual hockey play, and would be exciting for the fans.

I like the shootout. Even at 0-8 I'm still a fan. I see it as a way to measure a teams depth. We had David fucking Clarkson win one for us.
