...who thinks the NFL is an over-publicized league with a game that isn't interesting
enough to rate the publicity it gets?

I will watch what should actually be called "gridball" occasionally, but not that often.

The Europeans are right to insist that their "footy" has a better claim to the name "football"
than the NFL's game.

I probably should have put this on another forum, but done is done.

But it's a good league to gamble on (provided it doesn't have scab refs) and that is really all that matters.

I think a lot of the appeal is that the teams only play once a week so it's easier to watch every game. It makes the games a big event so even if you're playing against the Kansas City Chiefs it's worth watching. Even tho I love hockey more than any other sport and love the Pens more than any other team, I have a hard time watching if my Pens play against the Florida Panthers. Not sayin' the Panthers aren't worth watching, but in the scope of an 82 game schedule, I would rather sit that game out and do something else.

Never understood how football is more popular than hockey. I like watching football but I would much rather watch a NHL game.

Part of that has to be that football can be played in warm climates like the Oklahoma I grew up in.

If I hadn't had a New England native as a father I may never have started following hockey, even with
what was then a Bruins farm team in Oklahoma City. There's an Edmonton farm team there now, FYI.

Problem with hockey is that the equipment is very expensive and ice isn't always available. With football, you just need a ball. With hockey you need ice, skates, sticks, pucks, nets. Can be tough to get a pickup game going during the spring, summer, and fall unless you got lots of money to spend on renting out ice time.

Football has one thing superior to every other sport - you can watch the entire 16-game season.

I love hockey, but if you made me pick... I dunno, it would be a close call.

It's very easy to see why football is far and away America's favorite sport and it has nothing to do with being a "better" sport or product. It caters to the ADD nation we have become. It is on once a week, on a day when most people aren't doing anything and during a season when most people would rather be inside. Combine that with there are only 16 games in a season, so even if you went into a coma for 3 weeks you wouldn't have missed too much. Then you have a million different graphics, replays, etc. that you can show throughout the game because there's only about 11 minutes of actual action. So people only have to pay attention to the action for what 5-10 seconds? at a time. Then they can look at replays and stats. It's slow enough so that everything that is happening can be thoroughly explained to the viewers, this is good for the "casual fan". So it's not necessarily the best sport, it's just the easiest to sell.

That's a contradiction. The reason it gets so much publicity is because people are that interested in hearing any news, highlights, or anything with the NFL name attached to it that it rates through the roof. If people didn't like it, it wouldn't get the air time.

ESPN doesn't dictate what people watch, the put up whatever brings in the ratings. Hockey doesn't rate in the US so ESPN doesn't cover it. It rates like crazy in Canada, guess what they talk about most on Spo(u)rtscentre?

i wonder how many people realize that there is actually only 12-15 minutes of actual gameplay during a football game. the rest of it is just wasted by the play clock

I will say this: with the Pirates doing well and the Pens season on the horizon, my interest in the NFL season is at an all time low. I'm sick of thugs and arrogant pricks more worried about their dance moves after a play than actually making a play. And this includes my team. The Steelers just named Maurkice Pouncey one of their team captains. I mean, come on.
