I don't think the #10 tells a story of direction. I think they could take an offensive player as still go heavy defense after that. With that pick I just hope they get the BPA regardless of side of the ball. I just want a playmaker. Picking top ten, you have got to land a solid eventual starter for years to come.

You have your choice of playmakers at #10. You are going to get an elite talent, no matter what side of the ball you draft.

Spending picks after #10 on defense would be nice, but we did exactly that in 2012 -- drafting defense in the 3rd, 4th, 2 in the 5th, 6th and 7th. It is a crap shoot after the first couple rounds, as none of those players have shown the Lions much in 2 years.

The offense already has two WRs, 2 RBs, the QB, the TE and most of the OL locked up for multiple years. They need to give the defense some more help in the back 7, instead of relying on the DL to cause all the havoc.

It'd be fun to see the Lions get Watkins or Evans, but it'd just be overkill on offense, as there is only so many touches to go around. An elite player for the defense would upgrade the team much more than another weapon for the offense, IMO.

Like LP said, we need to land a long-term, impact starter, regardless of which side of the ball he's on.

It's not nearly as simple as identifying a position of need and then drafting the "top rated" player at that position. If it were that easy there wouldn't be guys in the top ten every single year that completely bust out.

Think of guys like Mike Williams, Levi Brown, Rolando McClain, Tyson Alualu, Blaine Gabbert, Trent Richardson, Justin Blackmon, Dion Jordan, etc... Shit- look at least year's top ten: we took hands-down the best performer of that group in Ansah, and the rest, save for Joeckel, really didn't live up to their draft status. Two "can't miss" guards were taken in the top ten and we took one in the 3rd round who was head-and-shoulders better than either.

All I'm trying to get at here is that picking in the top ten is not a slam-dunk at all. Lock in on a certain position, rather than the actual player, and you'll get burned.

also had the game clinching pick against our lions

No he didn't. I was at that game. Revis didn't even play in the 2nd half. Their rookie Banks picked off that pass. And it was one that should've been caught by CJ. He just happened to catch the deflected ball.

Mike Williams would have been a great pro if he was just a lot more talented and had a better work ethic.

Love the Tate signing. Do agree the defense needs some toys though. I am going to wait til after FA and draft are done to be negative. New regime, new thought process. (maybe)...Not sure of the path being taken. A WR at #10 will show me.

If Watkins is there at 10 I think Detroit would have to take him. Evans is 50/50 if he is there. I would have a hard time seeing Evans at 10 being the best player available. Unless not QBs or ots go in the top 9. To me Evans is a nice pick up in a trade down scenario, but with Tate that pick would seem bad at 10.

No matter where you pick it isn't a slam dunk. You will just have first crack at the elite college talent available. Talent doesn't always mean success though, and that is why there are so many 1st round busts.

Picking in the top 10 though -- there should be multiple players are both sides of the ball Detroit would be comfortable drafting. It is just a matter of what direction they want to go.

This is the good thing about the Lions defense. There isn't a single position of need, there are multiple positions of need. They can go with a CB, they can go with an OLB, they can go with a safety, they could go with a DE, and with the Lions announcing they aren't picking up Fairley 5th year option -- they could draft DT too.

The spot on the team where it is a singular position of need is on offense, where they are just missing a 3rd WR.

I'd be pretty happy with Aaron Donald now that we've declined Fairley's option.

Auction him off for a low 2nd or 3rd, maybe a 4th next year on top, and pick up the hard-working athletic freak Donald...

I would hate this, and not just because TP wrote it. Swapping out DT's is spinning our wheels. Fairely is fucking awesome, and Mayhew is a dumb ass for not picking up his 5th year.

Speaking of Mayhew fucking shit up, when is he going to sign Suh? He said he wanted to have this done before the start of FA, now he's saying he's not worried if it doesn't get done by week 1 WTF?

This would be on lewand not Mayhew. And lewand has said for a while that the start of FA wasn't likely.

I think it is better to sign him later and put up as much money as possible this year. Lions need to see who does what in this new system and money later would be great.

For four years, Suh has been one of the best defensive tackles in the NFL. And for the last three off-seasons (including when the Lions had organized but unofficial workouts during the 2011 lockout), the Pro Bowler has spent a good portion of his time working out away from the team.
Last year, for instance, Suh earned just $2,100 of a possible $5,600 in workout bonuses for taking part in the Lions' organized off-season program. Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson, for comparison, earned all $5,600.

$5600.00 Like he needs that $$$. A night out at the strip club at best, or maybe 1st two hours
