Ovechkin now needs 21 goals to break the record.
The Capitals have 37 games left and Ovechkin's average over the last 3 seasons would net on average 19.1 goals if he remains healthy. So he currently sits at likely just falling short of getting the record this year, especially since he is still getting stronger from his injury.
Then again, he could have some hot stretch and score 4 in 3 games and all of a sudden he's ahead of the pace. Or he could start to tighten up as he gets closer to the record and fall well short.
Optimistic outlook: He has 21 goals this season in 29 games. He needs 21 more for the record in 8 more games than that.
In any case, it's going to be close this year if he remains healthy. I have tickets for the last 2 home games and I'm buying tickets for all the Caps' road games to cover the last 5 games of the season this year. I'm going to be there if it happens this season. If it's next year and he has like 3 goals to go, ticket prices are going to be insane.
If you are an Isles, Pens, or Blue Jackets' fan, it's surprisingly cheap right now to get a ticket to a potentially all-time historic moment (or a potential huge profit) if Ovechkin is threatening at the end of this season.
If he does it on the road, I can’t think of a better place than game 82 in Pittsburgh. With Sid leading the Pens over the boards to congratulate him.
Maybe Malkin will put a couple flags on his hat and they'll just let OV skate down undefended with 2 sticks.
OV gets another goal, the only goal tonight in a 1-0 OT victory in Ottawa.
Ovechkin sets a new NHL record scoring on the 179th goalie of his career and passing the now #2 Jagr who scored on one less.
