The good thing is he doesn't have the wear and tear of a 30 year old player. Even if he's 75% of what he was he'll be a steal. DLaw combined with the upgrades at DT will alleviate a lot of the pushback on that side.

Yep, problem is with such a long layoff, that if is a very BIG IF

Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio reports Cowboys LB Aldon Smith was officially reinstated.
Smith, 31 in September, is now eligible to participate in all team activities immediately. Reportedly weighing in at 287 pounds (up from 265) after training with NFL insider Jay Glazer throughout the offseason, it's still a concern that Smith hasn't taken the field since 2015. There's really no telling what to expect from Smith during his one-year comeback contract in Dallas.
I hope he can contribute this year... :hope:

He hadn't had double digit sacks in 8 years.
He may do OK, but I doubt he sees double digit sacks again.
Double digit sacks??? Heck, if he hits 7 sacks it would be a huge signing. Not one returning Cowboy had more than 5 sacks last year (that's kind of a depressing thought) so I don't think anyone is expecting that from a guy that hasn't played in years

last season Robert Quinn and Michael Bennett accounted for 17.5 sacks out of the team's 39 total. even with them on the other end Tank only got 5, hopefully the addition of Poe and McCoy in the middle forces offenses to loosen up on blocking Tank but with out another solid DE /Edge opposite Tank unless we get massive production from ASmith, Gregory, Crawford and Anae we are going to need a defensive scheme that has more blitzes designed into it. perhaps we need to consider someone like Everett Griffen

Tank wasn't terrible last season, but a disappointment like most of the defense. Quinn getting all those sacks did not surprise me. Quinn has been an elite pass rusher for a long time

Smith was an elite pass rusher early on in his career. If right mentally and physically he could make QBs miserable. Especially with mccoy, poe, tank. I really like this front 4 and I hope the defensive staff has some blitzes dialed up for Jaylon

Who was that guy Marinelli got 7 sacks out of that one year? Some guy off the street. I think Smith potentially can get 7 sacks given the pedigree. It could be more than 7 or maybe he gets none. The Cowboys are not paying Smith much to find out if has anything left. Quinn used his opportunity to cash in. Now if Smith has a huge year his baggage could factor in on him staying around. Gregory came back after the long layoff and did well in 2018 and he was not really starting.

Your right. That was the guy. Could not remember the name. I dont think he did much after that season I just remember him playing pretty well out of nowhere.

In my opinion he won't get double digit sacks but 7 may be more realistic.

The new DC hopefully gets more out of the edge rushers than did the previous regime.

Smith won't be the elite pass rusher he was 7 years ago. That is expecting too much.

Tank,Gregory and Smith have proven in the past they can put serious pressure on QB. Getting Anae in the 5th round was a steal. Poe and McCoy can also create pressure. They will need to because the secondary is a concern..
