FOX's Jay Glazer reports new Cowboys LB Aldon Smith currently weighs 287 pounds.
Per Glazer, who has also been serving as one of Smith's trainers, that is by design. Smith, who has not played since 2015, was mostly recently listed at 265 pounds in the NFL. "We trained him and got him up (from 260) to about 287 pounds, completely rocked up, solid as can be, very low body fat," Glazer gushed. "He has trained his butt off. His conditioning is great. ... He is just freaking monstrous." Smith, who is going on 31, has always been a rare athlete. Even on the wrong side of 30, he could be an immediate difference maker for the Cowboys if he finally has his personal life in order.

Lets hope he is correct.

This could be an upgrade over Quinn if he is reinstated, stays out of trouble, and did not forget how to play football.. the stars are really going to need to align though. Smith was a beast when he played for the Nimers. Yeah. I hope Smith and Gregory can replace all those pressures and sacks Quinn got... you think about the potential of the DL? We have not had this type of talent on the DL in forever. QBs are going to get smacked around. Now get that secondary addressed in the draft

Aldon Smith Discusses “Soul Searching” Journey

Aldon Smith wants to play in the NFL again. Not just for himself, but for others who have been through similar personal struggles.

Smith, the seventh overall draft pick by the 49ers in 2011, signed a one-year deal with the Cowboys last week. Currently suspended for past violations of the league's substance abuse and personal conduct policies, he hopes to be reinstated by the NFL after spending the last four and a half years out of football. According to reports, he has been clean and sober for months.

Thursday, Smith spoke to FOX Sports' Jay Glazer about his time away from football and the battle to get his life and career back on track.

"It's been a whole lot of soul searching. It's been a journey filled with ups and downs," Smith said. "And during the process, during the journey, there's been some self-inflicting wounds. But in the process I came out with a better understanding of who I am and what I want for my life. It gave me a greater appreciation for the game I'm blessed to play."

Smith, 30, was a pass-rushing force early in his career. His 19.5 sacks helped San Francisco reach the Super Bowl in 2012, and he has 47.5 sacks in 59 career games. But off-the-field issues led to suspensions and ended stints with the 49ers and Raiders.

Smith said 2018 was a particularly tough year away from the game.

"I didn't have a lot of value for how I thought about myself," he said. "I was sleeping under a car for some nights because my sickness took me there. And I had a home to sleep in. But I was in such a dark place that I didn't see myself deserving anything other than that."

Now in a much better place, Smith hopes a return to the NFL would help inspire others dealing with personal issues.

"I believe that with the platform the NFL
gives players and particularly me with the things that I've gone through and things I've learned, it would give me a chance to help out others," he said.

Should add jay Glazer to that.
I am sure he makes calls to certain coaches when he thought A. Smith had it turned around & was in shape.
Dont really believe it was an accident McCarthy ran into Smith at that Gym. I believe some short person orchestrated the meet in the background.
Regardless I wonder how our GB fan now sees it.

Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio reports Cowboys LB Aldon Smith was officially reinstated.
Smith, 31 in September, is now eligible to participate in all team activities immediately. Reportedly weighing in at 287 pounds (up from 265) after training with NFL insider Jay Glazer throughout the offseason, it's still a concern that Smith hasn't taken the field since 2015. There's really no telling what to expect from Smith during his one-year comeback contract in Dallas.

With this news I have to believe Gregory will also be reinstated as Smith issues were bigger.

He's got allot to prove allot to warrant the money spent on him. Mostly because no other team showed interest so he could have been signed for league minimum.

I Hesitantly opened up this thread half expecting to to say Aldon Smith retired or was arrested. Good news. Even if he can no longer play at this level he gets his chance at redemption and to make some money. The rest, as they say, is up to him...

Also agree with the Gregory comment @Manster7588, I suspect we hear on that one soon too.

Where did you read that? I read a lot of teams showed interest in him

Regardless, that sure as heck looks like a pretty low contract to me
"The contract does not include any guaranteed money, but Smith will earn $90,000 once he is reinstated by the NFL. Thirty days after reinstatement, he will get another $50,000. When he shows up for training camp, he will receive $100,000, another $100,000 after two preseason games and $100,000 at the end of the preseason. If he does not make the 53-man roster, the Cowboys would be on the hook for $440,000.

Smith will earn a $910,000 base salary and $40,625 every time he is on the active gameday roster, totaling $650,000. He has incentives totaling $2 million for sacks -- $500,000 for eight, $1 million for 10, $1.5 million for 12, and $2 million for 14."

"In the end, Smith picked the Cowboys over the Broncos and other unidentified teams."

Smith is very capable of getting double digit sacks (even at 30) especially with DLaw getting double teamed. I just hope he stays away from booze and does not drive drunk. We are looking at a player with likely his last chance. He already threw away 50 to 70 million and it could have been more than that

Smith if healthy and staying out of trouble has the potential to be a steal and if not it’s a cheap Hail Mary.
Gregory is the same
The only issue I have is will they stay on the straight and narrow path or drive 180 mph into the ditch on a curve in the road?
Time will tell I wish them both the best

Interesting note on Gregory's reinstatement.

By rule Goodell has 60 days to rule on reinstatement, Gregory applied on March 21st.

Do the math.

So now does this give Gregory a fair grievance against Goodell?

Maybe he has already ruled or at least complied in some other manner?
Perhaps there is a clause in the CBA that allows for the asking of additional information or the such by the 60 day mark and perhaps that was done. Often times that would then give Gregory 30(?) days to respond and then Goodell another 30(?) to act?

Gregory never really hurt anyone but himself as best I can tell and has a legit mental illness, whereas a guy like Smith was just an AHole who was out of control and did some not so good stuff. The hope is guys like Smith weren't in the right state of mind and are "better". But a guy like Gregory seems to have broken some rules that are no longer rules. I really hope he gets reinstated, whereas for Smith I just wanted it because it could help the team.

I considered an extension, but I'd have to assume Gregory would have to approve it. Maybe Rodger said he's not fully sold just yet and needs a few more days to watch Gregory's behavior, and if all goes well he will approve it.
