The Oregonian:

Oregon starting LT Tyler Johnstone will be in charge of keeping Texas defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat away from quarterback Marcus Mariota. Jeffcoat is the 2013 winner of the Hendricks Award as the nation’s top defensive end. He ranks third in the nation with 12 sacks and was voted the Big 12 Conference defensive player of the year.

Jeffcoat is 6-foot-5 and 245 pounds, and according to Oregon head coach Mark Helfrich, he is fast enough to run past you, and strong enough to run through you.
“He is one of those guys who is really big, but elusive as well, while still being powerful,’’ Helfrich said. “That’s what makes him special.’’
It figures to be one of the most important matchups of the Alamo Bowl. As the protector of Mariota’s blind side, Johnstone carries a lot of responsibility, a burden his coaches say he carried admirably this season going against the likes of All-Americans Anthony Barr of UCLA and Trent Murphy of Stanford.

“I think he has been pretty darn productive,’’ Ducks offensive line coach Steve Greatwood said. “He has gone against some very good players and I think he has accredited himself well. He’s had a couple slip ups, given up some sacks, but against the guys he does, you know, the Barr’s, etcetera ... they don’t earn the accolades they’ve got for being average.’’
Helfrich called Johnstone’s season “good” and said “at times he has been our best lineman.’’

However, after being a Freshman All-American, Johnstone earned only honorable mention on the Pac-12 all conference teams.
“He’s a guy who can play a lot better,’’ Helfrich said. “At times he was our best guy. Other times ... it’s just experience. Him trusting himself in situations.’’
Greatwood said Johnstone grades out as one of the Ducks’ best assignment blockers, and is one of the best at finishing his blocks. But Greatwood said his technique could improve, which perhaps is magnified more because he can’t rely on his size to bail him out of technical mistakes. "He has to do a better job," Greatwood said.
“He is a guy who has to play technically really sound against a strong guy like Jeffcoat because he doesn’t weigh 330 pounds like some of these guys,’’ Helfrich said.

When he went against other marquee ends this season, Johnstone said he found himself jittery and out of sorts in the beginning of the game. UCLA’s Barr beat him on Oregon’s sixth play from scrimmage, resulting in a sack and a fumble by Mariota. Against Stanford, Johnstone said Murphy repeatedly beat him on the game’s opening drive, which allowed him to pressure Mariota.
But in each game, after the initial buzz of the matchup wore off, Johnstone said he held his own. Against Texas, he will apply the lessons learned.
“I’ve learned that’s all it takes for me: I have to calm down and play my game and not try to do something different because the guy I’m going against is good,’’ Johnstone said. “That’s what I’m going to do this game.’’
