I thought he'd get more bank than that - especially after what Fried got...
Agreed! Burnes is younger and more accomplished than Fried and got less money(and years). Burnes has been top 10 for Cy Young five years in a row while Fried has never placed in the top 10. It makes Burnes look like a bit of a bargain. Nice move for AZ.

Burnes approached the Dbacks looking for a deal bc he lives and trains in phoenix and has an infant son.

Clearly the sox have improved and though the yankees offense has gotten worse the pitching staff has gotten better.

Either way, at this point the O’s either get vast improvement from the other stars or they’re a third place team.

Either Elias cant spend money and lied to the fans, or he wont.

Some of the prevailing sentiment seems to be that he has a need to be the smartest guy in the room, and he thinks he can win without making big money deals.

Clearly this means that either the pipeline is set up in a way in which replacements for established stars are always in development, or the window for the O’s is now officially tied to whenever henderson reaches free agency.

Sucks either way.

State income taxes were also a factor, apparently, as TOR and SF were also in the running and have much higher tax rates than AZ does.

I’m not sure what the O’s are doing. I thought the new ownership was going to spend aggressively. This team has a great cheap/young core and needs some reinforcements to be among the best teams in the league. I haven’t even seen them rumored to be involved with the better free agents, though. I’m surprised.

To be fair to Baltimore, I saw something that they offered more than Arizona along.

You saw something that said the Orioles topped 6/$210m for Burnes?? I have a verrrry hard time believing that. They’ve never spent anything even close to that on a player before.

He wanted to go back to the NL. Not surprising but I wonder how much guaranteed. Toronto seems to be getting shit on this offseason so far
Nobody wants to play in Canada for the Blue Jays. They have to overpay by a LOT to get marquee free agents to even think about going there. This has been more obvious in recent years.

NL West could get 3 playoff teams. All projections and injuries matter but LA, SD and ARI all playoff caliber teams

Orioles are going to regress, it seems
I think the O's issue is they see the major contracts coming for Henderson and Rutschman and want to keep the books clean for them. They both have a way to go before free agency but the contracts they demand will be staggering.

Their minor leagues is not as great as it used to be either. They still have Mayo and Basallo.

Seems they are almost stuck in the middle of wanting the roster to develop more- while going for it. Their pitching is just not gonna get it done.

I will say- they have the potential to have a solid rotation if the injured guys come along- Bradish, Means and Kremer all have had injury issues and are all decent mid-rotation guys with some upside. Grayson obviously has a lot of upside and is the de-facto ace now.

They get their big closer back this year. The pitching depth is what is going to do them in if you ask me. Even if they didnt get Burnes back they should have gotten a Buehler or Flaherty (I guess they still can on Flaherty- though they had a bad experience with him).

I think it was dumb they didnt try and trade for a guy like Springer. Closer is good, rest of bullpen is prob. avg.-slightly below average. Lineup is good but not great.

If I am not mistaken Santader has not signed yet. If they lose him and Rutschman plays like he did in the 2nd half they could be in some real trouble. Yanks are def. better. Boston is prob better. They seem closer to the Rays than the Yanks now. In 2023 that wouldve been a major disappointment to hear in the 2024 offseason.
