7 shutout innings, 2 hits and 10 Ks for Max in last night's 1-0 division clincher. His regular season is over. He did walk 6 but that won't hurt him. That should do it unless one of the other top contenders does something truly amazing.

I think getting the final ERA under 3.00 locked it up for Max. His rankings:

* 1st in wins (21) and Win PCT (.875)
* 1st among starters in WHIP (0.97)
* 2nd in strikeouts (240)
* 5th among starters in ERA (2.90)

Yes, the wins are often the product of run support. But when you consider Max's other stats PLUS his wins, I think he is the clear favorite.

Scherzer has an extremely strong case even if you completely ignore his record. This isn't 2005 where Bartolo Colon won completely on the strength of his record when there was clearly a better pitcher.

I think he's earned the award at this point, unless Sale were to do something remarkable in his final start, like a CG 1-hit shutout with 14 Ks.

Sale currently at 2.97 ERA, so he can drop below Max in that category, but not enough to make up for the other stats. Sale currently has 220 walks+hits in 209 IP. He can't get his WHIP below 1.00 even with a perfect game.

There are stats other than WHIP & ERA.

Of course there are. But I don't see too many where Sale dominates Scherzer, other than CG (4 to 0).

Quality Starts: Max 25, Sale 23
ERA+: Max 145, Sale 144
K/BB: Sale 221/45 (4.91 to 1), Max 240/56 (4.29 to 1)
WAR: Sale 7.2, Max 6.7

I suspect the WAR is skewed by the games where the Tigers scored 8 or 9 runs for Max. But I can't see how you can punish Max for winning a game 9-2, whereas Sale wins one 4-2. Each guy gave up 2 runs. It's one of the things that makes WAR misleading.

That's kinda my feeling, Tiger bias admitted. I'll bet Max gets two-thirds of the first-place votes (67%).

Matt Scherzer easily. Future Cardinal. ;)

I wouldnt doubt it....alot of tiger fans hope he gets traded this offseason or during next year....like when they traded granderson for cheaper younger players. Tigers wont be able to pay him, so they might as well trade him for a nice package.

. I'm glad we could help him out. (The six walks weren't in the gameplan though)

I guess I wouldn't be surprised if Scherzer signed here, he's from the St. Louis area, and there were rumors that he has always wanted to play for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals are loaded with stud pitching. Adam Wainwright, Shelby Miller, Lance Lynn, Michael Wacha, Joe Kelly, Jaime Garcia, Carlos Martinez, Trevor Rosenthal. Who knows if they would make a run for Scherzer though. Our biggest need is a shortstop.

I know of an SS who will be an ex-Tiger soon. :nod:
