I get the feeling John Harbaugh sold cundiff to Jim in case we meet in he superbowl.

Eric Branch:

On FG attempts of 50-plus yards since 2006, Billy Cundiff is 1 of 10. He's 17 of 21 from 40-49 during that span. #49ers

So Akers may have more range, but Cundiff has been better at the distance from which Akers struggles.

I know signing Cubdiff doesn't mean Akers won't be kicking for us (though it has to be a possibility). If Cundiff is now our kicker, I wonder if Harbaugh will soften the blow by playing up the injury to Akers or just say that this was the best move for the team and pump up Cundiff a bit.

If we keep both as legitimate choices at kicker, do we just choose one or are there different situations where different distances equal different kicker? I suspect that we just choose one because of space on the active game roster (though both will be on our 53 man roster - that's not increased in the playoffs, right?) and have Lee as our backup kicker in case the kicker gets injured. But I don't know. Also, it seems you would have to choose one so that one would be in rhythm and not rusty. So does mean that Akers is benched? (I'm not sure how kickers are challenged by another behind him - I suspect it's a bit different than a QB competition?)

We are keeping both per Maiicco. Good move.

@MaioccoCSN: Source: The 49ers are keeping David Akers, too. Billy Cundiff and Akers will compete in practices to determine who kicks in playoffs.

What a great brother. If this ends up costing us, Harbaugh going to look like the gullible younger brother (even if he didn't talk to John).

based on what we've seen this year, Akers has higher odds of costing us.

yes, no guarantee Cundiff makes all his kicks, but fact is Akers has lost it.

Not that pro bowl means everything, Cundiff was in the pro bowl last year and muffed. Tynes wasn't and made the winning kick. Akers was in the pro bowl in 2011 (2010 season WC) and was 1/3 in a 5 point loss. Akers didn't make the pro bowl this year - so no muff?

for me, it doesn't have to be Cundiff? but i trust our FO has identified the best availables with NFL experience. i don't get as caught up in names as most.

obviously, we aren't able to add a Pro Bowl kicker. so if you're someone waiting for that elite name, you're not being realistic.

what is proven this year, Akers is 2nd worst percentage kicker in the NFL. if we know this and don't take action, we'll be more pissed losing a game or not being able to tie? with our offense every point is huge.

I like the move and the fact it was made so early in the two week window. My only complaint is they didn't do it with 2-3 weeks left in the reg season.

Best scenario is we don't get in a FG game but we'll likely need one at some point.

thought we should've made the move two weeks ago....think it was two weeks ago? anyways, it was ok we kept Akers cause most fans weren't sure at the time. [some STILL aren't sure even today]

well he missed TWO more against Arizona so that should've dashed any hope of him "snapping out of it". so now we KNOW he STILL has issues, do we want to enter the play-offs KNOWING our kicker has issues?

this is now the play-offs, lose and go home. do we trust Akers for three pressure packed games? i say we can improve on it, but if Baalke/Harbaugh decides on Akers, so be it.

I'm pretty sure every niner fans wants improvement.

You're making an assumption based that a kicker off the streets will be better in the playoffs than Akers fixing his issues.

if Crabtree dropped 31% of the passes thrown to him, are you going to think.......i'll replace him only when i get a 10th overall pick to take his place? are you going to play him till you can obtain Calvin Johnson or AJ Green?

if Kaep completed 45% of his passes, are you going to play him till you can replace him with Luck or RGIII?

I don't see the analogy, kickers don't have the same draft value as position players.

If a WR is struggling, you go to other receiving options.

If a QB is struggling..well you've seen what has happened with Alex this past 7 years.

The thing is there isn't a backup kicker waiting in the wings. There is isn't a developing kicker waiting for his chance.

There is a slumping probowl kicker and then there are has beens.

If the niners do start Cundiff (or another kicker) you know I'll rooting like hell for him to make em.

Whether its Akers, Cundiff, Rackers, etc. The next niner FG attempt will be without a lot of confidence

I know it is time to move on, but I'm still really upset SF didn't sign Ryan Longwell or Neil Rackers. Longwell is a West Coast guy who played for Cal, was signed by SF, and spent time in camp with SF when they drafted him before kicking in the hell hole of GB; he knows how to kick in awkward conditions. To Rackers credit, he holds a (slightly) better percentage than Longwell, and kicked outdoors his entire career (pretty sure), whereas Longwell spent half his career in Minny.

I just have no idea how Cundiff got 2 workouts, while neither of the other two were even named as possibilities. Nedney had some sentimental value, but he seems content with his post football life, so I didn't count him because I never had expectations of that happening.

But.... CUNDIFF?! Honestly, I hope Akers stays the kicker regardless of his misses, because Cundiff doesn't have the leg strength for long kicks, he can't do kick offs, and as I recall his best years were in a dome.... and he still sucked. Stick him in a windy stadium and watch him fail. AT LEAST LONGWELL PUNTED IN COLLEGE, TOO!

*sigh* I wonder if the team gauged Morten Anderson? (kidding)
