I myself purchased an original Escort back in the early '80's and when that one was stolen I purchased a new one updated model because the old one still had better range than my brother in-laws new Passport. It never let me down but was a brick.
I upgraded to a Valentine 1 shortly after they came out and enjoyed happy motoring for years, more than happy that te V1 was invisible to detector detectors, whereas the Escort was not.
I have been thinking I need to upgrade to the V1 Gen 2.

I beg, barrowed & stole to get an Escort before driving from NY to Fort Lauderdale for Spring Break.
It was the year before they put in the Concrete Barriers on the strip. (The beginning of the end.)

Man that thing saved me so many times.

RIP.

Maybe Texaberta? When I went there, I unplugged it completely. I’ve heard stories where they sit on the highway at night and give you a shot with their unit and if you slow down, they pull you over and look for it.
I got lucky in Virginia one night where they are illegal.

As you said, cop shot me with radar and I let right off the gas. I did not hit the brake so the brake lights wouldn't light up. Sure enough blue lights came on. I yanked it off the windshield and stuffed it in my back pack. The cop came up and first thing he asked if I had a radar detector. I said no and he said he was going to have to search my car because I slowed down as soon as he turned his radar on. Right at that time my CB started making noise and I said that's because talk on the CB was to look out for him and I heard it just a couple seconds before his lights came on.
It wasn't true, I hadn't heard anybody on the CB for a while it was just super lucky timing.
He believed me and let me go even though he got me for 70 in a 55.

Tricksy coppers…

I don’t even take mine off the dash or windshield if I’m pulled over by them here.
