No Royals suspended and....

baseball America

prospect status

pre-2012 #91-has crappy season
pre-2013 not ranked-has crappy season
pre-2014 not ranked-has great season
pre-2015 #18-has crappy season

The guy went from out of the top 100 for 2 seasons for having horrible seasons, not because of injury but lack of command, then just jumped all the way to #18 after 1 great season.

Minor league number 4.08 era with a 1.387 whip...now look at Shane Greene's. Even Drew Hutchinson had 1 great minor league season and keeps struggling in the pros, John Lamb, Duffy and Ventura are up and down and they had better minor league careers.

Norris has had 1 great minor league season and all the rest have sucked. There is a reason he wasn't a prospect his other minor league seasons.
Age is a big flaw in your argument. Raul Mondesi in the Royals system is another good example. (he's more of the Alcides Escobar mold of SS with power sprinkled in, but I digress)

Dombrowski's out.

Heard it on my way home. Watching the presser now introducing Al Avila as GM.

gave up quite a bit for a pretty meh reliever.

No kidding and I'm not just saying this cuz his first outing lost us a game. I said it right away.

You just can't give up a super young upside prospect for typical reliever.

Maybe if the guy is like a bettances or dominant closer type. But not for a 3.80 career era guy.

dougplayer doesn't know the difference between a GM and a BM. His repertoire is simply "Tigers are great - Your team sucks". I am sure that to dougie, Dombrowski was the greatest GM ever. Now, whoever the new GM is --- "he'll" be the greatest GM ever. Ditto the new Tiger manager, the new left fielder, the new batboy, the new Tiger mascot, his new Detroit Tiger hemorrhoid suppositories........

If the Royals sweep Detroit - I think you can pretty much call an end to dougie's appearances on baseball forums. (At least until Detroit makes a "Tremendous Trade" for a utility infielder this winter)

Crappy season? He was 5.0 years younger than the average AAA player. That's very significant. Also, a 3.97 ERA in A/A+ at age 20 is crappy?

Age is a big factor in prospect rankings, and for good reason. He's hyped because he has four pitches and some scouts see him as having three potential plus offerings (fastball, curve, slider) and having a #2/#3 type ceiling. His command issues stem from a delivery inconsistency. Tigers have had success with mechanical issues before (see Sanchez and Scherzer). We'll see.

yes, 3.97 in A/A+ isn't that good, good pitchers can get guys their age out if your going to argue he was 5 yrs young than AAA players, the guy should have been able to dominate his own age players. Tons of pitchers have done better than a 3.97. at 20 in A/A+. Just look up some MLB pitchers, it will give you a good idea.

Look, he had an incredible season in 2014, and justifies the #18 ranking with that seasons stats...but before that, there is a reason Baseball America didn't have him ranked for years.

Age isn't a big factor in rankings. They have always had 18, 19, 20, 21 yr olds ranked high better take another look at the top 100. Norris wasn't during those years, it happens. The guy just broke out a good season. The guy is a prospect for it as well. John Lamb used to be ranked early in his career, #18, had tommy john, battled back, is having an incredible year this year....he will probably vault up the rankings too. It happens. Maybe Norris had Tommy john for those years.

bottom line- going from not ranked top 100 to all of sudden #18th, that's a big step up. But maybe he grew mentally and physically, it wouldn't be the first time its happened. If you look at top 100 rankings from say 10 years ago, its amazing how anyone can guess who will make it in the pros. I know its not all on stats but the numbers do tell a pattern over the years.

Heck, Mondosi keeps getting ranked as a Royals #1, but the kid hasn't been able to hit against kids his own age already. If he grows, he might get there but his ranking is pretty damn bad, I think he is ranked high more on pedigree than baseball stats. But deshields, young jr all mlb kids get tagged that way. Jorge Boniface is ranked as well and that guy can't hit yet either These two are ranked on stuff other than actual baseball stats and almost all MLB hitters could hit in A and AA. They don't hit .230 in A and AA and hit higher all of a sudden in the pros. These two royals practically tell me, they can rank anyone for whatever reason they make up.

plus, its minor league pitching, its mostly all a guessing game until they get in the big leagues anyway. Van Poppel and his 5.58 era career taught us all that.

Verlander coming up short against the Royals. Dougy awfully quiet.

JV made two huge mistakes to Sal Perez. 0-2 pitch right down the middle for an RBI single, and another fastball right down the middle for the 3-run homer. The old JV would have spotted those up-and-in and possibly got the guy to chase. Just shows how far off JV's command still is.

Ooops.... 2-run homer for Sal, not 3-run. My point still stands.

dougie....did you see the twitter remark sent out by Dombrowski? He said the real reason he left was "the complete stupidity of Detroit Tiger fans!" How long have you and DD been in contact?

on the other hand

Matt Boyd looks really good, his minor league numbers suggest he will stick around for awile.
