the grades are never that significant. I would have love to have seen the grades on Amerson and Swearinger. So if you take Tuitt in your scenario you would carry five DE? Or who would you cut?

Personally, as bad as our defense has been.. .I would carry the five. Because Bowen and Hatcher are up in age. So a little insurance cant hurt. And we are going to be platooning our D-line no matter what. Also it would give us three guys who can play DT or DE in Hatcher, Coefield and Baker. So yes I would carry 8 D-lineman in this situation. Im expecting we carry seven this year in any case.

What carry 7 or 8?? I know a few teams have carried 7 from time to time. I agree 8 would be alot. But do you cut a guy you think can help you to carry an extra WR or DB that wont be active on game days any way?? It should be about keeping the best 53, not about picking a player in the draft because you have a need at the position.

a 3-4 team carrying 7. Never heard of that. If Tuitt is the pick then it should send some DE packing. Most likely Bowen.

Philly and Cleaveland both run a base 3-4 defense. both carried 7 D-lineman last year.

I'm with Shark. If a stud DE is there for the taking, then you take him. That guy will spend the first year or two learning the ropes and be ready to take over when Hatcher is gone.

Nearly all of these signings are short term fixes. The long term (3+ years) needs have not changed.

VT... I havent actually figured out what or who I hope the team picks yet. Im waiting to see what if any other moves we make in FA. I admit D-line might be off the table at the moment. But if a stud is there at any position aside from QB, I would hope we make the move even if it creates a log jam at a position. Quality over quantity.

Agreed. But in that case, the deal is actually 3 years $20 million. Or $6.66 million per year on average. We end up swallowing $2.25 million as dead space in 2017. Considering Peppers is two years older and just got $30 million fir three years, we could have done MUCH worse on this contract bro.

Peppers = HOF
Hatcher = one year wonder at this point

Good point. How ever are you seriously contending that an improved pass rush from the entire team (which is likely what this move provides in part) Is not worth $6.8 million a year?? I know you want to give the young guys a shot. But we have been over this. A 3-5 year rebuild is NOT in the plans. We knew they were not going to just sit back and not address some of the areas on this team. If there were a better option, I would love to see it here.

We carried Cofield, Baker, Golston, Jenkins, Bowen, Nield/Merling. That is 6 right there.

If Tuitt is there and he's the best player on our board, we take him. The only people on our DL that are sure to be here in 2 years are Baker, Cofield, and maybe Jenkins. If you draft a Tuitt, then you can cut a Bowen and get a stop gap FA that you supposedly skipped in the draft.

I'm the one who has said from the beginning you can't judge our secondary because of the inconsistent pressure we provide. I have stated that DE is a top need on this team.

And we just went out and signed a DE.

Reality is, this was bound to happen from the moment we made the trade for RG3. You cant give up four picks for one guy and NOT expect to have to dip into free agency to fill some holes. We got a good deal on a player who should be here for at least the next three years. I know some will say we should have just saved the money and see what we get out of the young guys. But the reality of todays NFL is, there are no rebuilding years. The coach and staff that is not seriously trying to win a super bowl every year, find themselves looking for a new team. Because we lack the draft pick resources to address needs with premium rookies, it wasnt a matter of IF we had to sign a starter or two in free agency. Just a matter of which positions. The only reason it didnt happen two years ago was because of the cap sanctions.

If the guy wasn't 40 years old...I wouldn't mind nearly as much.

But he isnt 40. He is 32, we signed him to a sweetheart deal for four years of which we can realistically expect he will play three of those years. And even if as some have suspected he is really only a 4-5 sack per year guy who got motivated in a contract year... thats 4-5 sacks that we didnt get last year from our line. I would have said worth around $5 million a year. throw in the fact that him coming here means he one wont be chasing around our QB twice a year, and two it actually hurts a division rival... its worth it to me for the Extra $1.6 million.

I will bet you he isn't starting for us in year 3 on his current contract.

You might be right. But even if he isnt, he costs us $6.7 million a year for those two years. Only way this deal bites us is if he gets hurt and doesnt play a snap.
