9 mil signing bonus total base salary of 4.5 mil in the first two years. that is 13.5 mil in two years. 6.5 a season. Right?

but we can cut him in year 3 and its only a 7.25 mil cap hit. we would only pay him 10 illion in the first tow years. Right?

Wrong. Remember my numbers are only a guess. What I know for sure is, he got $9 million signing bonus. And reportedly a $1.5 base. Thats his guaranteed $10.5 right there. Year two salary is basically a lock because unless his base in year two is $6.75 million, it would cost money to cut him. IF he has a base of $6.75 in yar two, we could cut him for even money. BUt would have basically paid him $10.5 million for one year. Bad deal in that case. Either year three or year 4 will be structured so its an even money cut though. Like I said, give me 24 hours, the numbers will likely really be out then and I will tell you if I think it was a good deal. Right now it looks OK on the base numbers. BUt I need the meat of the deal.

13.5 in the first two years. If he is cut before year three, we take a $4.5 dead money hit, but actually save $2 million and he would have made $6.75 million a year. Not too bad.

So its 6.75 mil a year for 2 years. I don't think he gets to year 3. We actually save money if we cut him.

Good deal. A solid 2 year stop gap. Gives us time to get someone in this draft or more likely the 1st rounder next year to take over.

I don't like it. When he is cut after year 2, we will carry 4 million of dead cap into the next two years (2 mil each year). So just when we may need that money to contend...we will have to rework more contracts.

Not quite. If we cut him after year two, we take the hit of $4.5 million. But his base salary in year three is $6.5 million. SO in effect it would cost us two million less to cut him than to carry him. If we cut him in year four, we save $5.25 million against the cap. So worst case its a two year deal at $6.75 million a year. Best case it's 4 years at $6.8 average with his highest cap hit being in 2017 at $9.75 million.

To put it into better prospective for you guys. Hatchers deal puts him 7th on the list as far as average salary per year. Admited its about $1.5 million more per year than I like. But I would pay the extra $1 million a year to not only possibly improve our pass rush from the front seven while also depriving a division rival of his services. the fact that Hatcher wont be chasing our QB on his second knee rebuild is also a bonus.

Yes but we are looking at 4 million in dead space following his release.

dude.. we are carrying 11 million in dead space as we type. Its a part of doing business in the NFL. We could have not signed him and avoided it. But as i have said before the concept of the 3-5 year plan does not exist in the NFL any more. Its a calculated risk. We improve the pass rush, retool the O-line and give Griffin more weapons and the team improves. It should be easier to build off of a team that finishes 7-9 with an improved defense, than trying to improve another 3-13 team that ends up firing the DC.

Correction 12.5 million in dead space.

Carrying 11 million in dead space on a crappy team is not the same as carrying it as a contender.

That's the problem with America. They think debt is just part of life rather than trying to be fiscally responsible.

We have made ONE, I repeat ONE semi big ticket signing (unless you count Rak as well). That was Hatcher. A guy who should improve our pass rush from the D-line while also taking that same thing away from our hated rival AND making sure he isnt on the field twice a year trying to kill our own QB who is one more fucked up knee from retired. And people think its a bad thing?? Would I have liked for us to not have needed to make this move?? Sure. But at the end of the day he improves this team for the next 2-3 years. the move hurts our hated rival, both on the field and in the locker room. And all for the low low price of $6.8 million a year tops.

How would you suggest we be fiscally responsible AND improve on this team?? You really think another 3-13 or 4-12 season would cut it?? You really think if we are 8-8 in three years we would have a shot in hell of retaining griffin unless he sucks?? Most of your "contending teams" are carrying any where from 2-12 million in dead money this year. Hell Seattle just won the Lombardi and they are carrying $9 million in dead money. While the Bus are carrying less than $1 million and they sucked ass as much as we did last year.

I don't mind dead space...I mind dead space that you know will be dead on a 32 year old DT with one good season to his name while we are a 3 win team.
