Plus, the Padres!

Some of the divisional races took some serious hits yesterday.

Washington choked a 6-run lead to the Mets, lost a home series, and possibly lost Matt williams his job. Still plenty of ball left, but with that bullpen, the Nats can't go very far even if they made the playoffs.

Brian Cashman confirmed that Nate Eovaldi will be shut down for two weeks and possibly wouldn't be available for the playoffs. He also mentioned that Mark Teixiera most likely is done for the season as his shin bruise just refuses to heal without any steroids.

The Giants won, but the Dodgers have been hotter and now lead by 8.5 w/a majick numeral of 16. Only four games left head to head.

St. Louis and Pittsburgh have stumbled a bit and the Cubs have snuck to within 2 games of the Pirates, 6.5 back of the Cardinals. Lots of game left betwixt the three of them. (I'm sure some NL Central homer will chime in soon to tell me how many exactly, and call me a 'tard for saying "lots")

Annnd Francis's Royales have tripped lately, allowing the Twins to harbor some delusion of catching them. M# now 13.

We're in trouble pretty much. Runs will be tough to come by without big Tex.

Sucks he was having a damn good year also.

Excellent work, Smithers!

It was hard not to feel for Williams and Nationals fans last night. Having been on the other end of huge leads blown, I know it sucks. Especially having a reliever in who seems unable or unwilling to throw a single strike. A lot of that comeback took place with two outs and the Nats bullpen walked at least five guys. It could have been a lot worse had d'Arnaud not popped out to finally end it.

Will be very interesting to see if Chicago can complete the sweep of St. Louis this afternoon. Jexas McPickems-quitter was talking about how the Cubs were going to actually win the division a few weeks ago, and he might have been on to something

I don't know. When I see posts like this:

Cubs have the worst batting average in MLB, and the most walks.

I have reason to believe that even if he is right, it's dumb luck.

Well of course! Blind squirrels and sunshine on dog's asses, en sech. But that will be an interesting three-way to end the season, and then they will eliminate each other in the playoffs

Oh, for sure! They are just shitting luck all over the place right now! It's insane all the stuff that's going their way. But don't they say it's better to be lucky than good? I'm excited to see if they can 1. Catch or pass the two ahead of them and 2. If they do, see if they can sustain it in the postseason. It's a totally different animal and the team is chock full of rookies with tons of nervous energy.

Williams should be unemployed right now. That was fucking stupid as all fuck.

I've said it before - for a team with as much talent as the Nats have to not be running away with that circus act division, the manager should have been fired before the All-Star Break.

if they need to be motivated, maybe the GM picked the wrong players

That's an idyllic thought, but MLB exists in the real world. Certainly, GMs have a large portion of responsibility, but when 3/5ths of your MLB's-best-starting rotation is performing well below their career norms, as is the case with the Nats, I think you have to take a hard look at the manager and coaches.
