After dropping the second game in a row to the hapless Phillies, the Dodgers' once unsurmountable lead for best record in baseball is down to just two games.

Rockies loss coupled with a Brewers win means the Brewers are just 1 game behind Colorado for that 2nd wild card spot.

If the Rockies and Brewers have to meet for a tiebreaker game, the game would be played in Colorado thanks to their 4-3 advantage in head to head games this year. Funny how losing 3 of 4 at home, in April, can affect your whole season.

I understand where that perspective comes from. It's similar to the one from the wild-card-game-isn't-fair crowd. They say it's not fair that their entire season comes down to one game.

Another perspective is that Colorado and Milwaukee blew a combined 139 chances to avoid that tie breaker.

This offense is maddeningly inconsistent.

It needs a healthy Pedroia and Betts or it's going to go home quickly in October.

I think the tiebreaker game and the Wild Card game are different though. No one should complain about the tiebreaker because, like you said, they had chances to break that tie.

In the Wild Card game, however, the Diamondbacks could have a 5 or 6 game lead that will be wiped away by 1 game. The Yankees could have an even bigger lead that could be wiped away by one game.

So what? They didn't win their divisions. They're lucky they even have a shot at the playoffs.

They should be at a disadvantage to divisional winners.

Which they would still be if the Wild Card Round was best 2 out of 3.

For the record, I see your point and do agree about the difference you brought up about the two scenarios.

However, I don't think anyone should bitch about either.

I can at least understand the bitching about the one game. The MLB playoffs are already a crapshoot, we can make it best 2 out of 3. You would have to condense the divisional series which I think you can do. Right now there are 3 off days scheduled for, at most, a 5-game series.

I disagree. Then you're putting divisional winners on the shelf to cool for a week or so, which is usually not a good thing.

I love the one game format.

The playoffs are no longer about identifying the best team in baseball in a given year. They're about drama (and money). The single-elimination WC games guarantee that the playoff kick-off with essentially two Game 7s. Awesome drama.

This is coming from a guy who watched his team lose a Wild Card game from about five rows behind home plate.

You would simply push the divisional series back 1 day from where it is now.

I understand the reason they have the one-game, and sure, there's drama. But would it be that much less drama if you essentially have a Game 5/6 and possibly 7?

One game playoffs is beyond gay.
