Another team to consider is the Padres. They didn't go waiver wire crazy like some of the other teams in the same boat (Yankees, Angels, White Sox, Mets). Could they be a darkhorse to grab Giolito, still hoping that they can make a run of things in the last month of the season?I think it depends upon if we get Giolito.
The waiver order as of right now (ignoring sub .500 teams):
MIA
CIN
BOS
AZ
MIN
SF
However, we are only .5 ahead of MIN, AZ, BOS. We could "climb" to third with a weekday day game loss and three wins by the Sox, Snakes, and Twinkies.
The order will be overall record as of tomorrow end of games. I can't see a sub .500 team spoiling the waiver like we did with Cody Ross so I guess it comes down to: do we want to pay Giolito if he falls to us? If nobody claims him and he is free to sign wherever. In that case, I'm sure he'd prefer ATL, BAL, LAD, or TB. In short, if we want him we'll have to pay him for one month (about $1.7M). I could see MIN claiming him though. AZ could Cody Ross us too.
It should be noted that we could end up falling to 7th with a win and a Cubs loss. The Cubs, I think would also claim Giolito.
Bottom line: I think Winn gets a spot. But, we can hope for Giolito.
