There is absolutely no amount of defense that makes up for this. Dude needs to get it together for this team in the worst way. He’s reaching pitcher levels of offense behind the dish. If Luke Stevenson is there at 13 in the draft SF absolutely should take him
I don’t have any clue as to who will be available or who we may target in the draft. But drafting based on MLB needs is a mistake. Drafted players take 3+ years to arrive. A LOT happens in those 3 years.

The MLB draft should be BPA or signing-pool strategy (which, to be honest, I never really understood)

Im not suggesting to reach for a catcher, simply to take one if the value aligns with pick 13. But take a look at the position in the system. It’s completely barren. They need to address organizational depth there early in this draft.

Catchers hold their value better than almost every other position. OFC every position can fluke out, but it’s about collecting assets and a possible solution for something that is becoming a massive problem.

You know my feelings on the position. It is probably THE most important position on the field (I “downgrade” pitcher because that is half your roster). I believe, in general, a team should spend a 1st rounder (or equivalent international FA) on a catcher every 3 or 4 years. And I agree that we have a bunch of journeymen and Sugastey. And I don’t know that Sugastey is a top-level prospect.

I'd rather see Wade out of the lineup than Bailey. Wade may be hitting slightly better but Bailey's defense is much more needed than Wade's. It would be nice to see a little bit more Villar at 1st base.

Sugastey has stalled out. He has shown less with the bat in the minors then Bailey did. I don't think Sugastey's defense is even at Bailey's level. Maybe he becomes a journeyman 3rd string catcher but I don't see much more than that at this point.

Looking at their last 4 drafts and every catcher they’ve taken. You have journeymen in AAA, Sugastey who can’t hit his weight in AA, Perez who is a turnstile in A+, Cavanaugh (temp in Sac) in SJ who is the only one looking decent

When your org constantly punts 2nd and 3rd rounders for high priced FAs, deficiencies will begin showing up in the minors.

It is getting to the point of “cutting”, but we need to remember…

And to be clear, I do NOT blame FZ for letting him go. He was rushed to the 40 thanks to the pandemic and the Giants hand was forced last year.

I cannot remember, was he really needed in 2020? I know that Posey sat out that year but was there no other options? Where was Eli Whiteside? I blame him for Bart being added in 2020.

Might be time to send Wisely down.
OTOH, entering last night, career WAR

Bailey: 7.0 fWAR in 888 PA
Bart: 2.5 fWAR in 874 PA

Catcher defense is a pretty big thing.
Bart refused to perform for us. Whatever the reason, he just wasn’t fitting in. It was the right decision to let him go.

Posey needs to have a man to man chat with Bailey, and tell him he needs to get his act together or he will come out of retirement and do his job for him.

Are you suggesting that Posey has not had numerous conversations with Bailey to this point?
