Can't see SabeySabes and Baer "write this year off." Waaaaay too much money to be lost with dwindling attendance.

Like it or not, and some years it won't be a good thing, we won't be sellers anytime soon.

I didn't mean we'd become sellers, I just think if we're 8 back in late July, they aren't going to empty the farm to win this year.

Hey, winning the World Series every OTHER year isn't a bad thing...

Maybe we'll alternate with St Louis the entire decade. Here's hoping!

Jesus, I was going through the past trade-deadline moves, the D-Back raped the Angels in this move, Dan Haren for Patrick Corbin, Tyler Skaggs, Rafael Rodriguez and Joe Saunders.

:agree:

Yeah, MLB would lose their nationwide audience if we won every year, and baseball would collapse. So stumbling and rebuilding for a year is really a GOOD thing.

I don't think they're going to empty the farm regardless, but if you're not a buyer at the deadline, you're a seller. There really is no in-between.

I think the key words to my post were "too many," emphasis on "too." Of course we're going to have to give something up to get Nolasco. I just wouldn't, for example, part with Crick, Panik, and Hembree.

Fair enough, so which of those binary options do you think they'd be if we're 8 back in late July?
I don't think they are too worried about attendance dropping off dramatically, we just won the WS, the ballpark is still a must see, etc. My point is that if they are in a deep hole I don't see why they wouldn't possibly shop a guy or two they don't intend to keep around. And I definitely don't see them giving up any prospects if we're that far back.

So tying a couple themes together, if come the deadline we are 7 games out, would we sell Timmeh?

Yeah, right now, if this team was a stock, I'd short them, at least for the next month or so. We are more than one player away from being competitive, so things won't get fixed at the deadline, at least not via the trade route.

The FO is going to have some very tough and ugly situations to face come July. If we are going to be buyers, that will have to include getting Vogey, Scoots, and Panda to rebound to form upon their respective recoveries, not to mention Timmeh, Cain, and Zeets. The more pieces that will have to fall into place will mean a more remote chance of them all happening.

Honestly, if I were Sabes, I'd be looking to move Timmeh and/or Zeets and/or Vogey, and maybe even Pagan or Scoots if the price was right.

Buyers. Too much downside risk in selling. And OF COURSE they're worried about attendance and its incumbant revenue. Mostly, though, they're worried about eyeballs lost in TV ratings if they are perceived as waiting for next year.

Point taken on the high end prospects, but they'll make a move.

Nope, for two reasons:

1. Timmy has very little value and a big contract; and
2. The Giants will not want to be perceived as chucking the season (not that getting rid of Timmy would necessarily mean that, but then see reason #1).

I don't think all of them have to happen. Cain and Bum should revert to form, Nolasco could be obtained, Zeets can be Zeets and the #5 SP can be a combo of Gaudin/Tron/Surkamp.

As for the lineup, yes we need health. But it's not illogical to think that Oxy, Scoots, and Panda will return to health and be productive. MVP, Herk, BB9, Shark, and Stamos are all legit bats as well. The bullpen is generally sound (tonight notwithstanding).

The bench is fine with Kobe, Abreu, GQ, Towers and JCP.

things are not dire, they just suck right now.

Because if we are to be sellers, then we are forsaking this year to build for the future. If another team is willing to overpay for Scoots or Pagan, then we should consider the offer. One could argue that they may be at or just past their primes, and might fetch a high price to a team desperate for their services. THink of the Wheeler for Beltran deal in reverse.
