Panik and Duffy really need to show up for the season. They are the only two in the infield not locked up to big contracts, and we have a lot of infield talent in the minors. They better feel the pressure, or they will be looking for work.

Panik's defense probably gives him more leeway than Duffy, though...

0-for-last-31 combined. The fact that we're winning has made this quieter, but these guys gotta start hitting.

Joe's wRC 98, which is right below the average. Duffy's is 79 though, which is terrible. And he's hitting 3rd.

I'm not sure why Boch hasn't shifted the lineup just a bit. I'd go:

Span, Panik, Posey, Belt, Pence, Craw, Duffy, P, Pagan

I'm not too concerned though. Both their BABIP are below .300 (Panik's at .237!!). They'll come up, and their walk and K rates are still good.

I like the idea of shaking it up, but I think I would prefer Duffy hitting in front of Craw. Craw knows how to hit in front of a pitcher, and actually excels there. He could also provide protection for Duffy.

I'm not much of a metrics guy, but Duffy has a dWAR of 0.6 so far this year. And that's with just 1/4 of the season gone by. At that rate, he'd end with a dWAR of 2.4, which would be amazing.

Panik is 0.0. So he needs to pick it up somewhere.

Hunter Pence has a dWAR of -0.7. That rates to a -2.8 for the year. Ugh.

I dont put a lot of weight in defensive metrics. There is probably some legit value there, but I think the eye-test is more important on defense.

To me, I see Panik making AMAZING plays all the time at 2B. Maybe he is not consistent enough for GG, but I can see him being in that discussion sometime in his career. Duffy is solid at 3B, but his arm is not a cannon and his glove is nothing super special (not saying he is bad, just not GG-quality). He is improving a lot, so he may be there eventually, though. I fully agree with the metrics on Pence. The eye-test shows that he is no longer a good defensive RFer. SSS? Maybe.

That's like saying a basketball player is great at defense if he blocks shots and makes steals. Defense is so much more.

The FO should be thinking about moving Pence to LF next year, and getting a RF (I'm sure that is being discussed - Pence's defense has been declining for some time now). It's unlikely Mac or JP will be ready to step up into starting on a contender by next year.

I'm enjoying this whole "efficient SP" thing.

More, please.

Sure. Like I said, he isn't super consistent yet. But Craw still makes a lot of errors, and he is widely considered the 2nd best defensive SS in the game today. He also use to have a real problem with the easy "at-'em" grounders. By your statement, Craw is "just a shot-blocker" or "just a ball-stealer".
