Joe Montana and Steve Young didn't have the best player in NFL history.

NOoooooooooooo, that never happened.

Of course they did. But don't act like Rice's production has nothing to do with who played QB for him.

You are acting like you have the book of knowledge that the parts around Smith are good.

I have consistently claimed mediocre and have supported it with evidence.

You pull doo doo out of your bum bum.

Smith is considering an agent change:

The options for quarterback Alex Smith - NFC West Blog - ESPN

As for the argument that learning under Manning is better than learning under Smith.... history shows that Manning liked to take all snaps in practice and the backups didn't get reps. C Painter had all the time to learn under Manning and did squat given the opportunity.

Just to be clear I am only pointing out the fact that a QB who was under Manning did squat. Not making an assumptions about talent level on Kap or Painter.

That is a concern, but won't CK get snaps when he runs the 2nd team offense against the starters on Defense during practice and camps? Also, lets cross that bridge about a slower development for CK when we get there in 2-3 years when Manning retires.

Painter might have sucked because he was comfortable with the idea that he'd never actually play, and he'd just hang out and make money holding a clipboard. We know backup QBs have done that before behind top QBs, NFL films had an episode about that I believe.

Another reason to suspect we have a good chance at Manning is we haven't, to my knowledge, introduced Randy Moss at a press conference yet. Wouldn't it be a huge splash to have Moss and Manning introduced at the same time?

What concerns me Is Peyton is with the Titans over the weekend an plans to announce his team monday or tuesday... smells like Tennesee has the fix in.

He's not with the Titans. He worked out for them today, that's all. Apparently he's celebrating his 11th anniversary (11 years today) this weekend in the Smokey Mountains.

But the Manning coverage hasn't been too intrusive or anything.

On a bright side Harbaugh threw to Moss and decided as the fall back plan... Captain Comeback might have one comeback left and be the first player coach in decades.. His presse if Favre could do it I can do it.

If you're Randy Moss you don't sign a contract without finding out their plans at QB. With them going out to Manning the very next day I find it hard to believe Moss didn't know anything.

Why would our chances be slim if we just went to the NFC championship? Wouldn't Manning want to go to a winner? Our chances look good, actually. It's probably down to us and Tennessee right now. So, everything you read about us going with Smith and forget about manning, you can throw out the window.

Their plans were Manning or Smith. I know Smith is not the best, but with our defense and continuity at least helping the offense, it's not out of the realm of possibilities that Moss is alright with Smith, expecially if Moss believes in himself.

Now I still think we're a distant third for Manning, but we're definitely in it.[/QUOTE]

Why a distant third? I admit I haven't read through this entire thread but I believe that there is going to be a press conference at 4949 Centennial Blvd on Tuesday.

One thing is for sure, it won't be for Alex Smith. If Alex signs (Manning out), there will only be reports, unless it's a flashy for show contract. If Manning signs, then obviously it's not for Smith.

One thing that struck me.....some people have claimed that Peyton would really prefer to be in the AFC, that he would not want to be faced up against Eli so often, and definitely not want to prevent him from getting to the SB. I didn't think much of that at first, seemed like it would be a minimal consideration.

But after hearing it a few times, considering who it was coming from - former players and people more likely to actually know him - I figure there could be some merit to it. I guess there are probably loads of smaller considerations like that which come into play.....things that make the obviously logical decision to come to SF less likely.

According to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle

Some of those who have pursued Manning the hardest believe he's head to San Francisco. If so, congrats to the 49ers.

Should be noted the guy has been around for a while especially covering the Oilers so it's likely he has some "friends" in the Titans organization or with knowledge of what's happening.

Yeah he's a true veteran. He also said he thinks we give Manning the best chance to win it.
