The so called experts can stop praising Steve Yzerman now. Allowing Mike Smith to walk was one of the dumbest moves of the offseason.

He must have seen something in Smith... He had specifically targetted Smith in the Brad Richards trade (2008).
I recall Canucks wanting to be involved and being told that TB wanted Smith over Schneider.

of course, he also put Smith on waivers three years later ... and 29 other GM's missed it too, because he cleared

Yzerman didn't trade for Smith, that was before his tenure. But yeah, who would pick up a goalie off waivers from an Yzerman team, the guy is an idiot!

ahh my mistake... TB had specifically targeted Smith, anyways.
that explains the waiver move later on

huh - I just found out that this was the first ever 2nd round playoff win for the Coyotes / Jets franchise.
Coyotes had previously made the playoffs 7 times, lost in first round each time.
Old Jets made playoffs 11 times, and 2nd round twice (85 and 87), but were swept by Edm both times.

Don't see how you can blame Stevie Y for Smith. Number one, he was terrible for Tampa when he was there. And number two, Sean Burke wasn't the goalie coach for the Lightning. He is the reason Smith has turned into a stud.

Go easy on him, how would an Isles fan know what a good GM looks like? :drum:

Yes, it does hold true...pretty sure a run and gun style hasn't won a Cup since probably the 80's. It just seems this year it's more goaltending saving team's butt's than actual D.

Not to be a dick, but honestly how much have you watched some of these Western teams? LA, STL, Phoenix, and Nashville are 4 of the toughest teams in the league to play against- as in move the puck from your own blue line through the neutral zone and then establish presence in the offensives zone. This is a characteristic that is specific to these 4 teams in the West- Detroit, Vancouver, and probably even my Sharks have better offenses than those 4, but those 4 have been consistently extremely tough all year long to move the puck against.

One reason those goalies look so good is that opposing teams just aren't having the same types of opportunities that teams like Detroit, Van, and yes even my Sharks give up. Its not an accident these 4 teams are left and teams with stud goalies such as Scheider/Lou, Tim Thomas, and Niemi (who was great in the 1st round) are at home.

Admittedly, not nearly as much as the east. Not saying that team D is absent, but merely that the goalies tend to be the bigger story of the postseason.

The Bettman's find a way to win yet again.

hindsight is always 20/20

Smith played like absolute shit in tampa bay. we've seen it countless times where players just need a change of scenery to get going.

Well there is no question these teams have been getting great goaltending, but these teams success do not surprise me. Sure, the Red Wings are probably good enough to be in the top 4, maybe the Canucks if they had a healthy Daniel (big maybe).... but the 4 remaining teams play a very tough style of hockey to play against.

Sounds as though the Coyotes will be staying in Arizona. Glendale city council voted in favour of bleeding taxpayers at least a million a year to keep a team nobody will support when the winning stops. Band wagons are wonderful things aren't they.

Bravo Gary. This is the type of southern market you cherish so much and need to have in the NHL right? :L
