i like W-L and QS a lot but in reality they are not top 3... maybe one of them is top 5...

1. ERA
2. WHIP
3. IP
4. QS
5. Ks
6. W-L %

would be my top 6 in that order

Not long at all. Still in the excited phase. I just hope were pretty enough for him.

I find it mildly odd that WHIP has caught on with the public but OPS against hasn't, when it gives you the same information that WHIP does and more. They could even call it Opposition OPS and give it the easy to remember acronym "OOPS", which fits perfectly since when a pitcher makes a mistake his "OOPS" is probably gonna go up.

keeping statistics easy to understand is important... WHIP is much easier statistic to calculate, and easier to explain to the mass... thats kind of the problem with many sabremetric statistics, you have to explain it to people for them to understand it- not good for a statistic...

and for relievers, inherited runners scoring % is big

Since the object of the game is to score runs, obviously the statistics that demonstrate which pitcher prevents scoring are important. I don't see innings pitched, or W-L being as important as WHIP and ERA, but OF COURSE they are vital to team success. Just look at Felix in Seattle. Doesn't have great W-L, but every AL player will tell you he is one of the best.

Very true comment.

Lately I have been seeing that "Wins above replacement" stat has been shown and explained on some broadcasts. I don't care for it and not sure it will catch on. I remember when they added slugging percentage to baseball cards, and I was like WTF is this? But it is a very important statistic and now is giving way to OPS.

K to w ratio
Whip

They lead in those 2 and the ERA, K's, QS, W/L, IP will all play out well.

But at the same time OPS has caught on to some degree on the offensive side of the ledger, and calculating and explaining it is exactly the same.

w/l is a team stat, not an individual stat

any argument otherwise is utterly moronic

yea, OPS is not too complicated... the calculation and explanation is easy enough for the masses to get behind the stat...

Right, and OOPS is the exact same thing. But for some reason no one ever cites it for pitchers. I look at it all the time for sim league.

I disagree... and i am tired of people discounting and discrediting "team" stats... they are still very important... how often do we see pitchers that win everytime they are in a close game, while other pitchers let up just enough runs to lose...
