Yeah, I think Finland has some kind of mandatory military service as well. I seem to recall Selanne having to go back to Finland to complete some kind of military commitments.
Except that in Finland, it's actual military training - weapons, first aid, combat. In Russia, winning a hockey tournament s enough.

Gotta wonder if they've asked Trouba about maybe waiving NTC? Really the only solution they have there to open up space.
That would be good. Especially when everyone in NYC watches him next year somewhere else and says "wow. He's a dirty bastard all of the sudden".

He’ll always hold a place in Stars folklore… for the wrong reason.

I assume LeFreniere is off the table, so...
Kakko, 1 of K Miller or B Schnieder and picks.

but with Trouba ($8M), Zibanajad ($8.5M), Fox ($9.5M) and Panarin ($11.6M), they are going to need to dump $$,
and frankly they need the ELC contracts to fill the roster

one of the rumo(u)rs during the season was Chytl, Schneider and picks.

Trouba has a nmc ... doubt he waives to come to Vancouver considering he left winnipeg to follow his wife out of town iirc

Like 43 said, whatever they’re doing is gonna be popcorn worthy here. JT or someone else big makes sense because they’re definitely in a window but how the hell do they do it?

This would have to trigger a full rebuild in Calgary. There just isn’t anything left on the bones if both are gone.

Kind of weird to start a rebuild with Darryl Sutter behind the bench, isn't it? It looks like things are ramping up though in Flames land.

Don't think the expectation was ever that they'd lose their two best players (or 2 of their 3 best) in one go.

If there was a path where they could go out and grab similar-calibre players it would make sense but looking at the top five highest-scoring non-Gaudreau UFA's you have Kadri (rejected a trade to Calgary), Forsberg (trending toward re-signing in Nash), Letang (no), Giroux (maybe?) and Bergeron (no). Low on draft capital, low on high-end prospects (and probably not a great idea to trade them now), probably worth keeping the younger roster guys like Andersson.

Unless you can swap Tkachuk somewhere for someone about as good and already signed and given what's available in next year's draft and the absolute haul Calgary could get on some of their guys (eat half of Marky's cap hit and send him to Edmonton for 3 first rounders lol) it's probably the best route.

It would be interesting to see a scorched earth blowout in Calgary, obviously you can't get rid of everybody, but you certainly could acquire some quality picks + prospects to kickstart the process.
