Unreal offseason for the Flames. And through all of this they might have gotten better in the short term.

For years, the Flames dabbled around the edges but didn't make any changes to the core. The core was ejected this off-season.

cbc kids ok GIF by CBC

Nothing breaks my heart more than seeing the Isles blow 5.750 million per season on a 4th line that includes Clutterfuck and Martin.

EDIT: The Barzal sweepstakes is going to be grand next off season. When he begs to get out of there.

Lots of time still but so far:

1) Fired his Cup-winning, Adams-winning head coach who literally everybody would want coaching their team.

2) Hasn't signed anybody of note.

3) Has played hardball with his young star d-man on his RFA negotiation.

4) Traded his first round pick for a very replacement-level D-man (who is also an RFA and is still unsigned).

5) Has made no move to extend the contract of the only decent young forward on his roster that expires next summer.

And yet there's still Leaf fans who think their team would've been better off with this old coot.

He never figured out the cap and his eye for diamonds in the rough left him long ago. The Devils are still recovering from a decade of botched first round picks and constantly trading 2nd/3rds.

The Isles don't even have 6 defensemen under contract.

Only good thing he did for the Leafs’ prospect pool was listen to Dubas over Hunter and draft Liljegren.

The Leafs had so much capital to play with from 16-17 and they wound up with nothing outside the first round.

It very well could, but Treliving deserves credit for making bold moves.
This. Who knows how good or bad it will go but knowing what they had wasn't going to win and willing to make the change is amazing.

If not you could be left with top 9 centers with the ages of 35, 36 and 37
And then your top 2 d-men with the ages of 34 and 35.

:pout:

Exactly right. He's been GM of the Flames for a long time now though, he's lasted longer than I thought he would lol
Seriously it is a last ditch effort to keep his job. He was probably on the way out anyway so why not make the dramatic change. Sure beats the perpetual rebuild.

His job was probably gone if they went into a rebuild regardless.

With the goalie they have and the defense corps, I think it forced his hand to go for it rather than embracing a rebuild. The next Flames GM can hande that task lol

Even if this blows up in Calgary’s faces the only way they’re really fucked long term is if Huberdeau completely falls off a cliff. Otherwise really the only guy on the roster who’s contract is completely immovable as is like is Kadri. They can cash all these pieces in and rebuild with new management.

It’s win-win.
