We have had a really good offseason, much better than last seasons bullcrap. As you say, with injury luck, we should be right there in the middle of things
Jerry definitely told Stephen to shove his cap calculations where the sun don’t shine. Best thing is this is clearly back to a Will McClay built team.

Nice discussion about Toia. Also, go into how much better he hopefully could be than Mazi on run downs, based on how poorly he played the run in his first two seasons.

I never had a doubt Toia would start on run downs, at least by midseason. Mazi has been the worst starting NT in the league for two years running. He's only been a "starter" because he was a 1st round pick

So far pads haven't even come on yet. Step 1: Toia still needs to make the team. Hopefully he can do at the NFL level what he did at the College level :hope:

I mean...the only way he doesn't make the team currently is injury or FA signing, which workd too

It's not too common for us to have 7th rounders make the 53 in year one. Fingers crossed of course, but there is no guarantee

No guarantees, but the Cowboys had a 4th round grade on him, which is how I think they see him. At the least, I think he gets a shot to win the job, and I think he is 1st and 2nd down plus short yardage

I saw where the Cowboys may withhold $500,000 from Diggs base salary and possibly fine him more for rehabbing his knee in Miami again instead of Dallas if he doesnt show for camp. If his injury stretched out till midseason, I could see the Cowboys looking to move him in the offseason

There was talk about him not being happy with the Cowboys training staff and wanting to rehab on his own. I think it was Clarence Hill who said it or another Cowboys writer? Hill usually seems to be full of crap so who knows.

It seems odd to withhold money from a guy for missing optional practices while injured but apparently the way the Cowboys structure some of these big contracts is that you need to attend x% of the total offseason program and this includes OTAs. Odd the league would allow them to do this with OTAs, but my feeling is that the player doesn't have to sign it if they don't want to, so if they sign it, enforce it. I also am all for the teams docking guys who hold out. When Zack Martin held out, they docked him but added the money back to his contract. That's BS to me. I'm ok with guys holding out in the offseason, but dock them if they do.

If Revel works out, I think it's going to be either Diggs or Bland. Not a smart cap move to give both huge deals. Hopefully Bland taking a little bit of a step back last year was injury related because the best case scenario is he bounces back, Revel plays great and Diggs gets healthy and plays well enough to trade. I think all 3 are better than 50/50 to happen.

I wouldn't mind seeing it play out where he stays in miami.

agreed
he seems like a no fit to this culture but who knows.
I have no idea how this plays out with Diggs. He getting paid now for what he did in the past I guess. He has barely played since he got the big bag

I was skimming an article about possible trades we could make blah blah blah.

A NT who is coming off a year stint in rehab for a torn meniscus is worth a second and a 4th. He's top tier in that category.

I don't want to give away such draft capital, even though it is such a position of need (fingers crossed Toia is a 2 down savior) I see fresh and young as a better way to go with an NFL team as the average time in the league is pretty damn short.

I'm assuming Derrick Brown based on the injury reference? Is that an old rumor from before he signed his deal a couple years ago or from this year?

That's an interesting one. I'm not one to want to give up a 1st or 2nd rounder in a trade but Brown is elite and just turned 27. I guess I'd have to see how he recovered from the injury to say what I'd do, but I don't think it would cost both a 2nd and a 4th. Pitt wanted a 2nd for Pickens but only got a 3rd. I will say the Brown of 2023 makes us a completely different team, Can you imagine a NT that gets 100 tackles? That's insane. Most in history. That's more a decision that would be based on what you think this team is. We obviously aren't winning a SB this year as is, but with Pickens I think we are definitely in the playoff picture if things go our way (Dak's health, OL, etc). Are we a SB team with Brown? No, probably not but a lot closer. At some point we need to "go for it" and that means getting a couple more guys like Brown. It probably makes more sense to make a move like that next year IMO but then it comes down to are we trying to win during Dak's window or the next guy. I'm not sure how many year Dak has left as a top half of the league starter. Maybe this season and 2 more, 3 max? Maybe not even if his body keeps breaking down.

I think there are a lot of NTs out there that can help this team including some that come late August won't even cost a pick or at least not more than a day three pick. By then we should have a good idea of how Mazi is coming along and of course if any of the kids look like players. At some point if we are serious about having post season success abasing good teams we need to stop the run. Maybe we do luck out and find an in-house solution. It seems like it has been years now that we have been hoping for that to happen and it hasn't, but maybe this is the year :noidea:.
If our medical checked Brown out and he got their thumbs up, I would absolutely give a 2nd for Brown.
Dallas has often been known for RBs, be it TD or Emmitt or Zeke. But we were also home to Bob Lilly and Randy White. An elite DT can drive a defense. We haven't had one in a while

I was really hoping for Brown a couple years ago when Car was unloading players. What a difference he would have made to this team. Like y ou say, the medical is the big thing there.
