I wouldn't like this draft at all. I wouldn't take Hampton at 12 because I think there are going to be better players on the board at other positions at 12, but I wouldn't hate him there either because I'm not convinced that Jeanty will be better than him, but the rest of it...no thanks

i hate to say it but needs sometimes override who's better.

Cowboys needs: backup QB. Workhorse RB, #2 WR, Depth at DT, Depth at RB, WR, CB, Edge

Backup QB is kind of far down on my list. I'm only interested in one before day 3 IF the team is seriously considering cutting Dak before his contract is up if we luck out on the right guy and I just can't see Jerry doing that. So would I draft a QB? Absolutely. Do I want them to knowing how I think they will run the team? No, not really.

Biggest needs if this team is serious about getting better. Not in order:
1) Starting RB, #2WR, one Starting OL (Tyler's position flex makes this any position), starting DT, Edge, starting LBer, Starting safety(s)
2) Better Depth throughout the DL, #3WR, #3CB (starter if/when Diggs is a cut candidate), QB, LBer depth, Another OL starter/depth guy, TE

In other words...everything. Bad news is our top end talent on our roster stinks. The good news is we can pretty much take any position and the player can help us right away. It's both a blessing and a curse. I think if we accept we aren't turning this thing around in one year and that it is a multi-year thing and we just let the scouts and the coaches do their thing, we can eventually get it going in the right direction. If we try to force it. We will crash and burn like always. Just take the potential superstar player in the draft and don't worry about position because we aren't going anywhere this year anyway. Best case scenario is our typical bounced in the first or second round and what good does that do? The goal should be Super Bowls, not good regular seasons. That's the difference between vision and just trying to be relevant.

So, hypothetical...it's the 2017 draft again, but say we are picking 10th....Will McClay tells you Patrick Mahomes is far and away the best player on our board. Jerry and Stephen tell will they NEED a DE. Will says the best edge rusher is TJ Watt....The Jones boys say our NEED is a traditional DE. Hello Taco Charlton.
If your needs are going to override the best player available in a draft that you have no control over who will be on your board, then go out and spend some damn money in free agency on that need

If they feel like Hampton is the best player on the board, I could live with it because we could certainly use the upgrade. If their best player is actually OT Josh Simmons, and they take the RB simply because they took Guyton last year, then that's bullshit

Interestingly on Hampton, Kiper has taken him twice for Dallas in mocks, and while typically I would pay as much attention to Kiper as I would a monkey throwing darts, Kiper did mock Tyler Smith to Dallas 3 times when most folks weren't even looking at him. He might have a little birdy in the building

so we could go with the best available at 12, 44 and 76 and we end up with 3 DE or 3 DT or 3 WR, etc because they the best available

Ive said many times the exception was doubling up. You can argue drafting for need all you want and I'll simply say Taco, Mazi, Guyton

i think Houston could be looking to trade up so trading down with them could bring us #25, #58 and #89 our #12. if that happened i would consider:

25. Emeka Egbuka WR Ohio State we have CeeDee Lamb as our #1 receiver with no #2
44. TreVeyon Henderson RB Ohio State. we have Javonte Williams and ?
58. Darien Porter CB Iowa State. we have Bland and Diggs but Diggs can't stay on the field
76. Tyler Shough QB Louisville, we have Prescott
89. best available player appears to Savion Williams WR TCU
but where is the DT?
a man crawls under a bed holding a flashlight

everyone says draft is deep in DT, but we get none?

This draft could prompt me to get pissed off. Too high for Hampton. I would rather draft Jadeh Barron instead of Hampton at 12. he is rising and he would be a playmaker. He has the dawg mentality and enough speed. I just have Barron as the type of CB I like. He is a great slot CB . But even Barron not my first choice at 12. But I see the fit. I think he would play the slot and be great there. I not sure why but I like Barron more than Johnson.

I do like Tuten and would love him in round five. He has real speed and is a home run threat. He looks like gadget guy,but think he could be more than that. A lot of the media is underating Tuten IMO. I personally would not waste a pick on a QB. Just bring in a UDFA qb. This mock is not good overall. Now if they trade down some and then draft Hampton? Still this mock is terrible.

I like Simmons. I have my doubts they draft him because of Guyton. Simmons is going to be better at LT than Guyton. Significantly better. Drafting Simmons could allow them to send Steele packing and possibly get Cap relief. Steeles production did not match all that money he gets . Guyton could then be moved to RT.

Nice thing about Simmons, like Banks, he could start out at RG IF Guyton tales the 2nd year peanut butter jump

a couple pretty darn good early day 3 DT's graded down for not having ideal height. Both Big 10 nose guards.

CJ West / Indiana 6'2 320 has a plus burst and strong against double teams.
or
Jamaree Caldwell / Oregon 6'2 325. also quick off the snap with good size who also does well against double teams.
it could come to this kinda DT.

I think as long as the guy drafted holds ground in double team situations and quick through a gap to stop some runs on the other side of the ball works well for the coahes vision. Mazi is part of the vision this year. Fish or cut bait season for M. Smith this year. Maybe Justin Rodgers has benefitted from 12 months of pro football and ready to challenge. It is a role that should be somewhat easy to fill the role through camp battles. Draft a 5th or 6th round guy that fits this staffs vision for the position. It is an old coaches saying, but competition is a good thing. Solomon Thomas has his role.

As with all teams in this league, injuries have a HUGE impact and Dallas is due for less work arounds than last year.

LOL.
