But, whose rankings? The Mel Kipers and other talking heads who know nothing about what teams really think? We aren't going to see the actual team rankings and that is all that matters. It only takes one team to think a guy has a legit "first round grade" to make it so. I always hated when everyone decided who should be taken and how good they will be and then grading the draft based on the mocks. I know it can be all we have for some players but I prefer just reading the strengths and weaknesses or even ranking that aren't mocks or looking at the visits or how much time they spent with guys at the combine for clues about both players and positions. It's still subjective of course but a little more useful. :2cents:

Of course the caveat to all of this is that as a Cowboy's fan, the Cowboys actually are incompetent and if you pay attention they pretty much tell you who they like or at least what position because while they say they go BPA, they absolutely draft for position because they don't fill holes in free agency.
Team Scouting. I don't trust any of those talking heads on TV.

yes...I think fans who post as often and for as long as most of us are long past the Kipers of the draft world.

Will McClay and coaching is this teams only hope.

I think it's really whether or not Jerry starts to care about winning again. I really think McClay and our scouts always do their job. Any other team in the league would be happy with their personnel folks drafts averaging a couple of starters and couple of rotation guys as well as an UFA or two that make the roster every once in a while. Two things about Jerry...there are times he overruled his own people on the draft and never with good results. And, more importantly, Jerry is now going into drafts after letting 5-6 productive starters walk and asking will to cover that up. It's just not sustainable even for a guy like McClay, especially when you are handcuffing him to specific positions instead of best player available

I haven't paid attention to that windbag Kiper in decades lol. He's a flake.
There are some guys out there that are pretty good though, they put in the work and are plugged into the specific teams. I've seen a couple of mocks lately that had Walter Nolen going to Dallas at 12 despite having Nolen as a late 1st-early 2nd on their big board. They put Nolen to Dallas because they had talked to contacts within the Cowboys who said they were very high on the player. Factor in the cap going up $25M is really bad for Dallas in a way.....we will still be "draft and develop" while other teams will be sitting there with $100M in cap space...meaning a guy like Osa is probably going to get an idiotic offer of $23M from some team and Dallas will have a gaping hole at 3T. I think guys like that are the only ones worth listening too
And Kipers haircut is ridiculous. Just seeing that face and hair kind of annoys me TBH. The nerdy voice and really I don't think he knows anything about football

I know the combine has not happened.. now pretending I am GM I got my top list candidates If I stay put at 12. I am interested to see what these players do at combine. I am only listing guys I think could be there at 12. I only listed Graham because he could drop. Not sure why I think that. Pros and cons I am sure. I just think these would be BPA types at position of need. I know the TE pick won't go over well but Ferg was terrible as TE 1 last year.

Jeanty
graham
Nolen
Warren.

Reinforcing my thoughts on Nolen. It would be hard to pass. I remember when Aaron Donald climbed the draft board back in 2014. Nolen has Similar play strength. Similar motor. Nolen would bring much needed physicality to the defense. He seems to really like to fight through double teams. He likes contact Great pass rusher and run stopper. It's the Physicality that i see him play with against SEC lineman. He got all kinds of pass rush technique... He would immediately be the starter at 3tech...but the thing is he is around 300 pounds and plays bigger than that. He can play all over the line IMO.. I am all in.

Are 12, I don't think Graham is long gone. There are a lot of interesting players that could be there, which means trade down is without a doubt the play to me. If we stay there, I do think Graham is gone. I think options are Jeanty, DT Kenneth Walker, the Missouri OT Membou or Banks from Texas, Jalan Walker the Edge from Georgia, my guy Warren, and the Corner from Michigan Johnson. All those kids are good players who fill needs. A trade down 5-6 spots would still net us a good player and another top 100 pick. We need a dance partner

Membou is very interesting. This kid can run block. He could play right guard. He could play tackle probably better than Guyton or Steele. I like the nastiness. Like it very much...my type of player. I would not mind him being the pick. Three 330 pounders in the middle...?

The kid is only 20 years old. I think he has incredible potential from LT to RG. I think Simmons is a little better, but his knee is a factor. I think Banks has a chance to be a great guard but probably not LT. I think Membou has a shot at LT to be a cornerstone

how bout the Michigan corner Johnson?
I will take a look at Johnson. I have to say the Eagles got the exact opposite from the draft last year than we did the year we took Goodrich and Larrimore. Still stings. LOL

IF Johnson runs a good 40 at the combine he should be in play. 5 through 15.

I am a big fan of Johnson, but I don't see any chance this team drafts CB at #12 unless they cut Diggs and they aren't cutting Diggs. I think we sign Lewis to a 2 year deal and when Butler is back our top 4 is set for the next two years.

I think corner may be a big need. I think Osa and JLewis would both be major blows if they end up leaving. I would be shocked if we play in the $20M+ per area Osa will demand. I think the big team to watch for with Lewis will be the Commanders. They will offer him more than Jerry will want to pay

The thought of Guyton and Steele both playing bothers me. I don't know that they would use another 1st round pick on OL two years in a row though.. am I the only one that thinks our starting offensive tackles play soft?. I don't see much aggression by either.. I kind sense a lack of dedication and effort from both these guys. They going to get Dak hurt.

I would look to upgrade LT and RG, but I think we are going to pretty much stand pat. I do like Hoffman, but he struggles vs power. Scrappy kid though. Guyton is 50/50. He has the talent but is very immature and has a poor work ethic so the light will either go on for him or he will be a total bust at LT

This is where I am at. They have to be regretting that big extension to Diggs though.. he may have to become a cap casualty. He been on IR ever since he signed the deal. He could be done as an impact player.

Diggs needs to stay on the field and he has to be better than he has been the last two years. When you are a liability in the run game you must be not just good, but really good in coverage. I think if Bland is healthy this year and back to where he was 2 years ago and if Diggs does not play at a high level this upcoming season he should be cut next offseason. It would be pretty easy from a cap perspective to just take his money and give it to Bland. His $9M salary this year guarantees in a couple weeks and is injury guaranteed so he is going nowhere this season. If we pay Diggs this year and cut him post 6/1 next year the salary savings are:
2026: $15.5M
2027: $20.5M
2028: $20M

Hoffman plays with heart.. I agree with that . But like you say he struggles against the bigger defensive tackles. I would prefer they upgrade RG and keep Hoffman as a backup.
