However, he's not an FA. He's a former 1st round pick that the Steelers traded for and likely the longer term option for them over Russell Wilson. They will need to pay one of the two next year, and I guess we'll see whether either signs as cheaply as $25M.
No. They don't need to pay either of them, and neither is likely to be a $25M QB in 2025. If either is then good luck to that player. The Steelers will make business decisions with whichever FA QBs are available in March 2025. They'll also consider trades and/or the Draft, much like 2024. The Steelers could possibly be the highest paying option for either Wilson or Fields, but that isn't a probable outcome. Every team is looking for a top 16 or top 10 QB and neither QB figures to be in the frame. Teams that want a new top whatever QB generally don't want their incumbent QBs to return.

Once the 5th year option is declined the 1st round Draft history doesn't mean anything.

That's a naive way to look at things. Every team invests in their own board, not anyone elses. Howie explains it well in the clip.

Of course. Still don't earn bonus points for ending a prospect's slide. It's not a cunning move, but instead an opportunistic one.

So you expect them to go into next year's draft with no QB carryover and select their new guy likely in the latter third of the first round?

The 1st round history does mean something, in that teams viewed him as a worthy prospect. It doesn't guarantee anything of course, but instead indicates the league perception (at least at that time). That's all I meant.

Teams that add two QBs and expel their previous options shouldn't be expected to clean house again a year later.

It looks like the Titans are signing Tyler Boyd. Titans receiving unit looks strong now with Hopkins, Ridley and Boyd, Levis will have plenty of weapons to throw to, it will be interesting to see how good he is.

Maybe that allows them to use Burks like he was used in college, just dump the ball off to him in space. Or, he doesn't stick on the roster at all I guess...

Burks has pretty much been a bust, I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s traded for a late round draft pick or something.

Raw player that didn't really play within structure as a college player. Returning to that in some form might reignite his upside. Injuries have really slowed him too.

"The Steelers will make business decisions with whichever FA QBs are available in March 2025. They'll also consider trades and/or the Draft, much like 2024". Not contentious or difficult to interpret. The Steelers went into this year's draft with no QB carryover. The Steelers are opportunistic. They're paying their 2 QBs for 2024 a combined total of $4.5M and they've invested just a future 6th round pick. The Steelers were far more invested in Pickett and Rudolph and both were jettisoned.

No-one expects the Eagles to pick-up Pickett's 5th year option before May 2025. No-one thinks Trubisky's Draft history meant anything to the Steelers.

If either Wilson or Fields looks like a top QB for 2025 there will be stiff competition for their services from teams with better cap situations. If they don't look like top QBs the Steelers won't want them back, even as back-ups. Beyond that very bland generalisation the QB situation for 2025 looks very messy. Some veterans will be retiring and there aren't obvious quality college candidates to replace them - the complete opposite to the market in 2024.

You're taking my statements to mean more than I intended, but whatever. Not worth arguing lol.

I'm now questioning Arnold's intelligence. They were probably speaking metaphorically, saying it was a tough neck-and-neck decision between the two. Then again, it is the Raiders, so jokes ensue.

lol I can't imagine they said that. "Welp, we called tails on you but the coin ended up heads, so we took Bowers. Oh by the way, we figured we'd call you and tell you to fuck off with that news."

I mean, to your point it's the Raiders, so it's possible that happened..

Goff secured the bag.

4 years and 212 mill, 171 mill is guaranteed.
If you have been as sorry as Detroit how do you not? Also traded away Stafford for the guy. Keep him around and keep building.

The building part gets tougher as he now will count an extra $20M on the cap annually, but they had to keep him.
