I have a feeling the Pats beat the Jets next week and SOS might not matter. Either way it looks like #2 is likely. So this begs the question, how does the board feel about Drake Maye?

A lot of Caleb talk. A lot of Daniels talk. What if the new GM wants Maye? I thought he was up and down this year, but I didn’t watch a ton of him.

I did a lot of research on the 2023 QB class realizing that our team would be in the market for the position. So, specifically to your question, I had him ranked very high when the season began, 2nd in fact, but because he had a noticeable up-and-down seasonal performance his stock dropped. Nobody knows with any high degree of certainty how these young talents will fare at the next level, we can envision what's possible given certain standards. (Who drafts them, coaches, teammates, and individual skillsets to name some)

Maye actually looks like the prototypical NFL QB and reminds me of Herbert, his arm talents are as good as most and he could surprise by becoming the best in this draft class depending upon where he goes.

So, what dropped him?

Happy feet, which led to throws that were head-scratchers. Perhaps he can work on this at the next level but bad footwork and inaccuracy go hand in hand.

Want to know who he reminded me of when it came time to pull the trigger? Sam Howell. Timing routes, especially in the NFL require your QB to often anticipate the opening and make that throw. Like Howell, he seems to wait a tick or two to see the separation before letting it go.

With that in mind, I'm not sure if he sees the field a clearly as he should. Not anticipating the route is bad enough but this guy may have been so focused on what his teammates were doing that he didn't see defenders. This led to some interceptions that were just baffling!

He's not really that bad as an off-schedule player, but Penix who is not really a runner works the pocket far better, and in comparison, he doesn't come close to what Williams or the dangerous Daniels can do. Worse he because of his size, (he's built like a cross between Herbert and Josh Allen) he tries to deliver blows instead of protecting himself when he does run. At the NFL level that could be a major issue.

Given the fact that I started with a top three, Maye (4) and Nix (5) would be the next two as I don't see anyone rated high enough to fill a third spot in this grouping. (For those interested, not even Sanders, who I see as a mid-draft candidate)

Hope this helps!

Wow! Yes sir! That helped. I have admitted that I'm about 50/50 when it comes to QBs coming out. Maybe 60/40. I've been scared to post this for fear that it won't age well, but I'll be a little deflated if they pass on Caleb and Daniels for Maye.

Caleb can make throws from every angle, loves to move around im the pocket while keeping his eyes down field the entire time. Daniels with the right coach (Johnson/Slowik) or some other QB whisperer feels like he has the potential to be the best of the bunch.

I just don't know. Thanks again for that analysis @Stymietee

Nope! I have some issues with 6' 1" QBs at the NFL level, so, If I'm drafting I would take either the 6' 4" Daniels or the 6' 3" Penix before taking him.

Who are your top 5?
