I think you are missing the point I believe cal made earlier. The advances with hitters have put an emphasis on torqueing the arm a lot more to put more spin on the ball and the expectations now is that starters throw harder and with more intensity from the very beginning of the arm. The results are more stress on every pitch, which means throwing fewer pitches in the game. And, with the fact that kids are throwing harder and putting more stress on their arms more often, more consistently and at a younger age, a lot more guys need serious surgeries, like TJ. It is an unfortunate reality we live in.Which is what makes it inexplicable. If the older guys could do it without all the advances in training and conditioning of today, these youngsters ought to be able to do it too.
