Other than Shaq Thompson(CAR) and Jaquan Jones (TEN) I dont see anyone worth trading for. I think we could afford to send Hock to another team with our WRs coming back soon. Wright has been a complete TE this year and a nice surprise.

Nope. No trading for other players when we already have a group of players who need reps so they can learn and grow into being an NFL starter or rotational player.

Get these players back from injury like Paschal, Cominsky, Romeo Okwara, Ifeatu Melifonwu, Jacobs and see how they perform.

Yep, I've been saying the same thing going all the way back to new league year, however the Hock lovers will hate this idea. You surely won't receive a 1st or 2nd round pick for him - you know the crazy Lions fans like to overrate their own players, but you might receive a 2023 3rd round pick and maybe a 2024 day-three pick to boot. Maybe.

I'm fine with Wright and Zylstra and newly drafted Mitchell going forward.

This is your best thought of the day - The thread and trading away Hockenson - not the thought of bringing in Shaq or Jones

Slim pickings as to who has the money to trade for Hock while also needing a TE and those teams are: NYG, Bengals, Chargers and maybe Titans. The latter two teams are in the red for 2023 by 3+M and 11+M respectively.

The Bengals and Giants are flush with money for 2023 and could easily fit Hockenson's 5th year option plus remaining 2022 base salary of approximately 625K.

Most other teams are set with TE position.

The Lions are the only team in the league that year after year trades away their best players. It's gotten us this far, maybe we should try to keep our good players for the next 50 years and see what happens.

Plus everyone in the league always says the 2 best things for a young QB is a pass catching RB and TE. And we (should be) in the market for a young new QB next year. Why would you want to get rid of Hockenson now?

Our defense is just too thin. We need to replace Brockers and we need another LB. We might actually need 2 of each.

Pass catching TEs are a dime a dozen. Hock is a good one but it does not seem like Johnsons offense utilizes it that much especially with so many balls going to the slot WR.

Team isn't going to contend for a playoff spot until
Hockenson brings nothing to the table in blocking whether it's pass or run
He isn't a YAC guy even though he had his greatest game ever as a Lion this year mostly all do to one play
He isn't quick, twitchy, fast, explosive nor breaks many tackles.
Paying a mediocre TE top 5 $ for the position isn't smart business
He's Not Travis Kelce or George Kittle or even Darren Waller and the latter barely can chip block

Plus

Pass catching TEs are a dime a dozen.

You can literally draft one any damn year that won't cost you 12-16M (but, but, but the salary cap always increases says fan x - insert name)

I'd rather save money by not extending Hockenson and use those resources to extend Jonah Jackson - in his 3rd year - and Penei Sewell

This team has had limited resources for three years running and then add in 2023

Last year the trade talk surrounded Taylor Decker. It never happened so you can assume to be safe here as well.

I’d give Hock a similar deal to Goedert.

No sense in creating another hole. You have a TE. Pay him.

No issue with that. The problem is with some other team overpaying him though.

They could tag him and I wouldn’t be mad.
I agree with Smitty on this. Hokinson is an extravagant expense if your team has talent, but not something you can just purge for little return when you lack talent just about everywhere.

We’d get maybe a fourth for him.

And it’d take a first or second to replace him.

I’m no cap expert, but I think he’d only be getting a little over a million raise from where he’s at right now.

It will come down to money. If it is reasonable then he stays, if not then he goes. I want to see how Mitchell does too going forward. He will get more reps with Wright out.
