My square headed Norwegian father-in-law loves the winter Limpics.

He used to do the ski jump thing back when he was 13-17 or so. Hard to believe as he's been moderately stunned since I've known him (1972). Maybe he had a hard landing? The guy in the old ABC Wide World of Sports intro with the guy ski jumping wiping out on the 90 M hill?

To me unless it's faster, higher, farther, more, etc. it doesn't matter.

Style and artistic achievement? Fuck that, leave it to Masked Singer.

The rest? I'm not even watching. No real appeal to me. I've always liked speed skating, But so many channels now you can't find where to record easily.

I know, I know...

Still, more and more I'm finding it hard to really give a shit about the Limpics.

I know, I know...

Plenty of larger winter countries that don’t do as well though. I think their approach to youth sports is certainly something the ridiculously competitive and structured US youth sports could learn from.

Does Norway Have the Answer to Excess in Youth Sports? (Published 2019)
If it was just about the snow, then shouldnt there be more than 4* winter olympics medals won by Alaskans since 2006 ?

Norway v Alaska - 7 times the population, 35 times the total medal haul since 2006

* and 2 of those 4 were members of the US womens hockey team

Good article from Time magazine about the sporting culture in Norway...

Ovrebo says that in Norway, organized youth sports teams cannot keep score until they are 13. “We want to leave the kids alone,” says Ovrebo. “We want them to play. We want them to develop, and be focused on social skills. They learn a lot from sports. They learn a lot from playing. They learn a lot from not being anxious. They learn a lot from not being counted. They learn a lot from not being judged. And they feel better. And they tend to stay on for longer.”

Norway has other sports development quirks. Trainers don’t tell athletes how much they weigh. “It’s very dangerous,” says Ovrebo. “They can develop eating disorders.” Olympic athletes don’t receive prize money or bonuses from their federations. “We think prize money turns people into something they shouldn’t be,” says Ovrebo.

Norway also wants high-character performers on its teams. “No jerks,” says Ovrebo.

With all the global warming going on Norway might be the only country with enough snow to be good at the Winter Olympics. :noidea:

Well, the last three weeks have shown that we do have our share of jerks in Canada.

/Or maybe it is the jerks have the largest and loudest megaphones :noidea:

Btw….with the Slovak win it shows once again that Slafkovsky was the best player in the games.
