From a story in SB Nation: Everyone on this board is represented in these four paragraphs whichever side you fall on.

And this begs the question: what’s more valuable for the team in the medium to long term, the value they would get from a top-2 pick, or these lessons learning in how to gut out wins like this?

For some, the answer might just be “yeah, I’ll take a Bedard or an Adam Fantilli, thanks,” and it’s hard to argue with that, but perhaps there’s more to this, more value to be found than from treating this season like it’s a lottery win or bust. We know about the problems that this team was grappling with when this season was starting, and they simply needed to be fixed (because truly, how much value is there in bringing a top prospect into a team that is fractured, full of bad habits).

We’re not here to tell you that you shouldn’t be hopeful that the team can finish badly enough to get themselves a very good player at the top of the draft, but it’s worth remembering that there’s more at stake than whatever happens in the lottery at the end of the season.

The foundation for success is larger than the addition of just one player, as talented as they might be. And while, to be clear, adding a potentially elite prospect to your system will certainly move the needle and it’s hard not to want that, they aren’t a cure-all for a team with much deeper issues, like the Flyers have here. The lottery luck is largely out of their hands, so we can still appreciate the work that’s being done to get players going and correct some bad habits. If they’re able to sustain that over the rest of the season is another question entirely, but if it is a strong foundation that we’re seeing set here, that’s something to appreciate as well.

I dont know if anyone has been watching the World Juniors but Bedard is on another planet right now. Ive never seen anyone dominate the tourney like he is doing.
It was on the other day but I never got a chance to watch any, 5 year old was running shit with the TV!

I agree with most of this, with the one caveat is that I'd rather have the McDavid/Draisatl/Matthews/Marner portion of the roster taken care of than to have what the Flyers have in most cases (guys that would be good or even great mid-bottom of the lineup guys on a contender). The one exception being Hart. Getting the goalie figured out is key too, which Toronto/Edmonton/Carolina don't have. Add in that the Flyers are in worse shape cap wise than some of these teams and it looks like even more of a disaster. They're projected to spend more cap space than Boston, Carolina, and Colorado this year. You can't tie up this much money on the bottom of the lineup and then go bargain hunting for top of the lineup players. It's so backwards. I don't understand how anyone in the Flyers organization can be OK with what they've done.
We need to draft better, first off. Carolina took Aho 35th overall, Slavin 120th overall and Necas 12th overall in 3 different drafts. That's 3 of their top 4 or 5 players. So, you don't necessarily need top 5 overall picks to draft your top players.

If we draft the right players (regardless of where we finish) and establish the team culture and identity that we want moving forward, by the time we sign those players to real money deals, guys like Hayes and Risto will probably be gone anyway.

Also, our available cap space doesn't matter much anyway if all we do is keep making the wrong decisions with free space.

I agree most of these players would be rentals and we are in no position to trade for a rental.

Duclair however with one year still remaining i can agree with.

OMFG. After years of multiple people trying to help you understand the fallacy of plus/minus, you’re still quoting it as a meaningful stat. Jesus Christ. Good to see nothing has changed with you, Larry and Curly.
Mid season grades from the Athletic: Hey JBM how does it feel to call me out and be so wrong. :L:pound::pound::pound:

Seeler C+
Prov C
DeAngelko C-
Sanheim D+
Braun D+
Risto D+
Zamula D

Disclaimer for Jackasses like JBM: Everyone on this board all ready knows that plus/ minus is not and end all be all stat but its a very good indicator of whos playing well and who is not.

Im am so disappointed on how Gauthier just glided around or stood and watched on almost every shift he took last night. It was to the point where the US top line was playing 4 on 5. It looked like he was in a coma or awestruck by the talent he was looking at on Canada. I was so psyched for him to play well last night. Needless to say it was a huge let down.

Oh absolutely they need to draft better. But for every Aho/Slavin you can find a hundred examples of 35th and 120th overall picks that didn't become high end guys. The chances of getting a high quality player are higher at the top of the draft. And I'd rather pick there, among guys that are so heavily scouted, than to trust the Flyers cadre of scouts to uncover guys in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th rounds.

The odds of getting a high end player are higher at the top of the draft. You can be an extremely fortunate fan and root for a team that's as well run as the Canes or Lightning; but I think one thing every single one of us can agree on is that the Flyers are not well run like that. Or even close to it.

Hate to hear that. I wasn't watching but was kind of following along and was hoping he'd have a big game. He was invisible in my 'following along', but I held out hope that it just didn't show up on twitter or in stats. Sad to hear it was an accurate representation :(

Hopefully it was just the big stage that he couldn't handle and will do better in the Bronze medal game.
