Interesting. I saw that Paton was getting a second interview.

I know nothing about any of them, but was hoping we would hire Fontenot. French sounds cool.
Same thought. I don’t know enough about any of these guys to pick between GM’s but my best guess was to want Fontenot.

Hard as a fan to have much thought into a GM unless crazy proven.

So Paton it is and now we go after Kelly as an assistant?

I would think that should be Paton’s decision to hire his assistant. I’ll be uncomfortable if that is anyone else’s decision.
I agree with this, but I think there has been a history of that occurring in Denver at times in the last few years.

When George and I were coming of age - the Draft Board could hit you and in my case it did.

George showed up with spurs on thinking it would help get him out of the draft. It did, but not the way he was thinking.

Right- I agree. But I was referring to this tweet. So far it is 50% right. So I am saying it looks like we are perhaps going to see Kelly next? Is it Paton’s wish or was it something Elway told a GM before he hired him? Kind of like the “Vance Joseph”agreement. Fully agree that if we really have a made a change to a real GM that Paton should be making this call.

Woody Paige

My best information is that Fontenot becomes Falcons GM and Paton Broncos GM. And Broncos offer to hire Kelly as assistant GM and VP of personnel.

And by the way, his name is pronounced Peyton.
somehow a familiar ring to it.

I appreciate that - we have enough spelling police - a pronunciation policeman is most welcome.

The more I read and hear about Paton, the more I like the hire. It seems like another quality hire to help move this team back to being competitive, and hopefully playing deep into playoffs.

Tonight I heard about the interview where Von was asked about potentially restructuring his contract, and it seemed to be a very sore subject. This leads me to believe that Von may have played his last game in Denver. For those of you that have not heard the interview it is below.

While I don't blame Von for not wanting to take a pay cut, I don't blame the Broncos if they don't want to pick up the $17.5 Million option for next year.

I love Von Miller - I don't think he is worth $17.5 million a year at this stage. He will have to chase his chickens somewhere else for that pay.

With they offseason about to start with Paton being hired as the new GM, I thought maybe looking at how the team improved or regressed from 2019 to 2020, and then look at if there was reason for the change.
Offense:
Yards Per Game:
2019: 298.6 ranks 28th.
2020: 335.6 ranks 22nd

Passing Yards Per Game:
2019: 194.7 ranks 28th
2020: 215.7 ranks 25th

Rushing Yards Per Game:
2019: 103.9 ranks 20th.
2020: 119.9 ranks 13th.

Points Per Game:
2019: 17.6 ranks 28th
2020: 20.2 ranks 27th

Defense:
Yards per Game:
2019: 337.0 ranks 12th
2020: 367.9 ranks 20th

Passing Yards Per Game:
2019: 225.6 ranks 11th.
2020: 237.9 ranks 16th

Rushing Yards Per Game:
2019: 111.4 ranks 16th.
2020: 130.0 ranks 24th.

Points Per Game:
2019: 19.8 ranks 10th.
2020: 27.9 ranks 24th.

Turnovers:
2019: +1 (16 give aways (10 INTs and 6 fumbles) and 17 take aways (10 INTs and 7 fumbles) ranks 13th.
2020: -16 (32 give aways (23 INTs and 9 fumbles) and 16 take aways (10 INTs and 6 fumbles)) ranks 32nd.

On offense we took some steps forward even with a really young team and improved in almost every category other then turnovers. I believe the turnovers are part of having a young QB, and not having Sutton. The number of turnovers has drop next year no matter who steps on the field.

I pretty much discount any statistics on the Defense as we were signing guys off the street and plugging them into starting lineup. I think this Defense was very good until pretty much the entire starting Defense was hurt, and the offense did very little to help them with turnovers, and being behind. If the offense is able to score enough points to keep pressure on the other team's offense then they will take more chances which will allow the defense more opportunities for additional turn overs. The priority for the offseason has to be figure who will return, and who won't. There could be a lot of turnover on the defensive side.

I have been listening and reading different opinions on what the Broncos may do. There are some questions that have come to my mind, and my opinion has potentially changed on some players. Here are my questions on the offensive side of the ball.
  • What to do at QB behind Lock?
  • Do we bring back Lindsay?
  • What to do as depth at RT?
Most of the positions on Offense are set. OLine, TE, WR, and RB are set.

At QB, I think Lock starts at the beginning of the year barring injury. We have 3 options, draft a QB early, sign a vet, or stay with the status quo. I am on board with signing a vet or stay with how we have minus Driskel. We will need someone on the practice squad so if we draft a guy to develop as an emergency QB if needed. If we go with a vet I really don't want to trade a pick for a guy. The vet guys that I am interested in to push Lock are in no particular order:
  • Jacoby Brissett - He showed a some promise at times.
  • Ryan Fitzpatrick - He can be inconsistent. Not sure he wants to come here to be in the same situation here as he has been in Miami. I am not sure that he returns to Miami if the anonymous tweet from one of his teammates.
  • Andy Dalton - He could step in keep the Broncos competitive if Lock fails and the defense is able to be what they were in 2019.
I know Lindsay is a favorite, but he doesn't seem to fit Shurmur, and with Gordon and Freeman being a free agent next year, it may make sense to draft a guy to fill the position in 2022. He will be an interesting decision.

We need some more stability at RT, and James has been missing more then available. If memory serves me correctly he played fairly well in limited action. I think we need a backup option, and I am not sold that we have that guy on our roster now.
