A lot of folks have forgotten that prior to his injury Tua Tag was hands down T.H.E. guy going towards the draft. After that all eyes turned to Joe Burrow, the wunderkind having a once in a generation season.

While you have to give major props to the young man for putting it all together and making himself so highly coveted, he's going to be talked about and examined to the ninth degree before draft time.

So, with respect to Burrows, let's take a look at his career stats. It's best to view these in conjunction with the game film so you guys can do that on your own.

STATS
2019
2018
2017
2016

CMP
ATT CMP% YDS AVG TD INT LNG RTG

402 527 76.3 5,671 10.8 60 6 78202.0

219 379 57.8 2,894 7.6 16 5 71 133.2

7 11 63.6 61 5.5 0 0 16110.2

22 28. 78.6 226. 8.1 2 0 36 169.9

After watching and studying him a bit more, I'm ready to swim against the tide and declare him the most uncertain pick in this draft ( based upon where he's going to be drafted)

I'll pass on this guy because behind all of last season's numbers, and in videos, I see Heath Shuler.
Laugh and ridicule to your collective hearts content, just remember that ya heard it from me first!

Up next: Tua Tag

What is the difference between Haskins and Burrow other than 10 more TD passes and a NC???

What is the difference between Haskins and Burrow other than 10 more TD passes and a NC???

Check out his body of work. His two really good seasons sandwiched two pretty average ones. As @gkekoa noted, his arm strength is suspect, but I spotted some things even more glaring that give rise to concern.

There's scant evidence of him being able to get rid of the ball quickly, especially when 1st read isn't there. In the two really good seasons, he, more often than not, had plenty of time (3 seconds but more often 4,5,6 seconds or greater) to make his throws and that's something that he won't get in the NFL on a regular basis, especially in Cincinnati. His completion rate during this time ballooned to 78.6 and 76.3 respectively. (more on this later)

During his pretty average seasons he appeared to just want to manage what was happening on the field, he was slow getting rid of the ball, lacking accuracy and arm strength on particular throws. Left hashmark to the far sideline often resulted in fluttering throws or off target ones. When throwing from the opposite hashmark you see a lot of front shoulder or completely off target kind of stuff. During this time his completion percentages were pretty average, 63.6 and 57.8 respectively.

Now, I do have a theory with regard to what accounted for the remarkable jump from a relative unknown to the likely 1st pick in the NFL draft. We begin with three of his strengths... pre-snap reads, resolve under pressure, and making fairly accurate plays out of structure. All great things, mentioned because they all play into my theory. (he has other strengths)

[Here is the later mentioned above]

Their offense was schemed masterfully by passing coordinator Joe Brady and offensive coordinator Steve Ensminger, because of this, Burrow was nearly a 100% two read (more often a first read) or run/ improvise QB. He wasn’t asked to go through progressions often in LSU’s offense, and anticipatory throws were in relatively short supply on tape. Add to the mix perhaps the best collection of wide receivers in college and you can see where I'm going with this. We know factually that Haskins was shown time and again, coming off of his first read, second read, and when necessary getting rid of the ball or finding a third or fourth option. While he (Haskins) seemed almost natural in doing this, it is a skill that Burrow has to learn and learn on the fly. In the meantime, if he's going to avoid being beaten up, deemed a bust, or scared into an early retirement (ala Heath Shuler) he has to hope that his body and reputation holds up as he leans heavily onto those three strengths mentioned.

Satisfied?

I didn't need to be satisfied. You did not answer my question though. What makes Haskins better? They both had one full year. I didn't say you were wrong about your analysis … research of Burrows. I do not think Burrows is a sure thing and going to Cincinnati won't help. Much like I said being drafted by the Redskins wouldn't help Haskins. Hoping the new coaching staff changes my though process there.

By the way I agree about Joe Brady but Haskins prospered by being at Ohio State. I don't think Tua is a sure thing either. That kid Love might be the best QB in the draft.

This is from a draft analysis site, probably much like you used.

Strengths
  • Off-the-charts football IQ and intangibles
  • Plays with brazen field presence and poise
  • Rapid ascension to chess master who can beat up coverages thrown at him
  • Initial field glances are often lies being told to safeties
  • Gets through full-field progressions with unique internal clock timed to the routes
  • Decisive from read to release with elite precision and placement
  • Stuck it into impossible windows on several occasions
  • Very good timing and anticipation
  • Throws pass-catchers away from coverage and into space
  • Throws with superb touch and trusts receivers to make the play
  • Deep dime-dropper, completing 55 percent with 24 TDs and 2 INTs in 2019
  • Separates from rush with deft climbs, slides and escapes
  • Above-average toughness in pocket and as runner
  • Unexpected wiggle to elude when scrambling
  • Makes explosive, off-schedule plays while on the move
  • Can deliver back-breaking runs to move the chains
Weaknesses

  • Polar opposite seasons in 2018 and 2019
  • A level of scheme fit is necessary
  • Below-average arm strength and average release quickness
  • Tends to work into more condensed areas of the field
  • Steep drop in accuracy on intermediate throws outside the numbers
  • Requires top-notch timing for out-breaking throws as a pro
  • Saw nose of ball dive on some throws field-side
  • Spotty high/low combo throws against long boundary CBs when they play it low to high
  • Early issues handling Clemson's disguised blitz packages
  • Scheme created clearer reads and easier one-on-one throws
  • Took sacks he didn't need to

Anyhow I am not a proponent of drafting another QB unless it is round 4 or later. Looking back (I know it is only 6 games) but it seems Haskins can move more in the pocket than many said right before he came out. He took a higher number of sacks than Keenum 29 to 15. His sack percentage was over 12%. So that one pre-draft comment versus actual production is still debatable I guess. Then too, it might just be indicative of a very young QB learning the pro game.

Honestly, haven't watched any tape on him? Is he good or something?
Just hear folks raving about his size, although he just made himself some money with that 4.39

Simmons is getting hype but I don't take him over Young at #2. Heck if we somehow we trade back I take Okuda the Ohio St Cb over Simmons.
