That's cool and all but doesn't it seem a bit over the top?

You mean comparing a college player who hasn't played a single professional game to two of the best hitters in the game right now is unreasonable?

(in all seriousness, I'll give the kid some slack, he's pumped about being drafted)

So, to sum up the first two days:

10 picks

4 SS
3 OF
2 1B
1 P

I do not know this team...

I mean, this was completely expected (the unexpected) going into this draft with a completely new regime.

Still, not a single pitcher until the 8th round is pretty surprising.

FZ said going into the draft that hitting was definitely the area they were going to address and that was more of a need organizationally (source: Giants, Farhan Zaidi seek 'game changer' with critical first pick in amateur draft).

I do wonder, though, if Zaidi has a pretty good idea of what they can get on the trade market this year. Looking at the Giants' top prospects, the top-4 is undisputed and they are all bats. After that it's arguable that the 5th prospect is also a bat (Canario). Sure, the Giants have significantly more pitching depth, but they lack the high-end pitching. Maybe that's what Zaidi thinks he can get at the deadline. Clearly they're building up their position player depth in this draft, and they have now 4 high-end hitting prospects. Maybe that was the approach for the draft, and at the deadline he's confident that more pitching prospects are available than hitting. Just a theory.

Maybe they are gambling that the guys drafted the past couple of years will be sufficient (or they are gambling on getting pitching prospects in July).

This is what I think. Not to discount Hjelly, Wong or Rivera, but presently they are all solid depth guys (I think Rivera has the best shot to be something more).

It's a good theory. An alternate one: FZ is pretty pumped about the pitching depth in the system (Anderson, Webb, Hjelle, Wong, Santos, Adon, Rivera, Williams, Beede, Doval, Corry, Marte, Jerez, etc...) and is looking to bulk up on hitters.

Kruk brought up a great point this morning that I have thought the last 15 years or so, but figured my logic must be flawed since it was never utilized...

Oracle should be a selling point to FA pitchers, so work on developing bats instead of pitchers.

So day three, 8 picks in:

4 P
1 OF
1 2B
1 1B
1 C

I'd think the rest of the draft goes like this: 50/50 pitchers and position players

19 and 20 are a P and CF.

First ten picks -- 9 hitters, one pitcher
Next ten -- five and five.

The Giants only took 16 pitchers in the 40 rounds of the 2019 draft, only 1 in the first 10 rounds . Definitely a shift in philosophy.

Wonder if Wyatt will be an under-slot. Maybe some cost-savings here for a guys later.

MLB didn’t even have McCray rated. That’s a bit scary to see from a third rounder...

McCray, who's dad famously ran through a wall in the minor leagues in 1991, sounds very raw. A commit to Florida State, I would assume that the Giants use some of that money saved from the 2nd round pick to try to sign him. Being that he is a high-risk, high-reward type player, I'm fine with whatever happens.

A few of the guys drafted have major league connections. Bishop's brother is on the Mariners' roster, McCray and Fitzgerald's fathers both briefly played in the big leagues in the late 80s/early 90s (man, that sound strange) and Aldrete's uncle played for the Giants for a couple of years (I think his dad was a minor leaguer as well).

It's way early but I think the FO is thinking:

C- Bart by 2021
1B - Logan by 2022
SS - Luciano by 2023
2B - ? Fitzgerald? Howard?
3B - ? Toribio? Gonzales?
LF - Bishop by 2022
CF - Ramos by 2021
RF - Shaw?
SP - DRod, Anderson, Beede, Webb, Hjelle, Wong

Blake Rivera and Greg Santos have higher upside than all of those SPs. Also, Seth Corry. But all three of those guys have a ways to go.

Canario is definitely in the discussion for CF. Honestly by 2023 you're probably envisioning Bishop-LF, Canario-CF, Ramos-RF, Shaw-DH.

I'll take the optimist route here, he's a guy that wasn't heavily scouted. Someone with the Giants saw him a couple of times, but didn't want to draw attention to him.

My understanding is that Mac just replaced him.
